Meaning of \"Meine Ehre Heibt Treue?\"

Hi Everyone,

I need some help with an assignment that my daughter has for school. She must take a "historical artifact" to school and write a paper about it, etc. We have a German WWII bayonet that has the above words inscribed. Can anyone help with the meaning? I went to babblefish and it translated it to "My honor Heibt faithful" so we just need help with the meaning of Heibt.

My guess is "My honor IS faithful?"

That is very interesting. I was going to suggest Babel Fish, but when I seen you already used it I thought I'd look for something else. One thing I thought interesting was when I ran the text through Free Translation it came back with "Does honor Heibt mean faithful?"

Are you sure you spelled "Heibt" correctly? Could you post a picture of the bayonet and/or the text in question? I'd sure like to see it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here is a picture of the knife. It's hard to read the wording with the glare. I will post another picture with a close up of the inscription.

Yes, I'm not sure about the spelling. I've tried P and K as well. Searching for the exact sentence on google gets a lot of hits so I think the spelling is correct.

Have you asked the teacher about this? From what I have read the last few years, kids bringing knives to school get expelled, charged and the knife confiscated. She might get a lesson you really don't want her to learn. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yeah, I'm worried about that particular issue. I'm calling the school in the morning. She is a senior in High School and she says other kids have brought similar items. We'll see. I will probably drop it off and pick it up.

I tried to check that link and AOL won't allow cut and paste of that funny lookin' B the Germans use. The word means" that is" and I found the definition by using www.onelook.com. Use the translation button.
