Trying to get 'J-Lo' out of the pen with Bear and move in a new sow for breeding, my husband did every thing short of shoot her. He even asked me to get his gun at one point. She is a hard-headed thing.

He tried herding her with a stick, yelling, running, chasing and at one point tried to kick her and she ran out from under him and he landed flat on his back, then she turned around and stepped daintily over him, despite the fact that he gave her every reason to smoosh him. That is a visual I will treasure for years. This six hundred pound sow picking her way carefully over the sprawled body of my husband.

This is a testament to this sow. I have seen her ravage her babies, attack other sows and maim boars to the point that they would never have another thing to do with her. But with Fred, she just bobbed and weaved and tried to stay out of his way. She knew he wanted something but didn't know what it was.

I kept saying, get the feed bag, get the feed bag. Finally I went and got it myself and she followed me right where he wanted her. I love this man to death, but two things have happened. His work requires him to spend way too much time away from home and he's lost his touch. The other thing is, he tries to do too many things too fast. Number two due to number one I guess.

I didn't dare say a disparaging word, he felt bad enough.

Why didn't you get the gun like your husband asked ??Thats the way to deal with a hard headed hog.........instead of J-Lo,you could of called her J-High,that is high as hanging upside down "high" in the meat cooler, split right down the middle.

I fought some just like that, and my custom slaughter guy offered to pick them up at my place. He used a 3' sqare of plywood and held it beside them. He steered them right onto the trailer, as if he had a rudder. He told me "you can make a pig go ANYWHERE if they cant see where they're going"

Go figure...

Mike, right, I think they call them 'blocker boards'. They actually make some that are lightweight fiberglass and work just as well.

I'm with you Steel!!!! I won't keep around an animal that is difficult at all. We will try and train them but if not off they go to the freezer. There are too many good animals out there to mess with the difficult ones.

Mike, when I was a kid showing hogs in the fair and livestock shows, it wasn't uncommon for two hogs to get into a fight in the show ring. The grownups usually told the kids to not get between them because they could get hurt, but some of the men would just try to separate them by kicking them. Many years later, at the Texas State Fair, I noticed in the hog show ring they had several partial sheets of plywood, with hand holds cut in them, to use for that purpose; just slide that plywood in between any hogs that got into a fight. Sorta made me wonder why no one thought of that when I was a kid. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Counter productive to our cause. She's a registered red duroc sow, bred to same breed registered boar. Her beautiful babies will be worth a hundred dollars apeice (at least) in September.

She's temperamental, but I look at her the same way you might look at a race horse.
