How important is it to have "McAfee.com VirusScan Online" or something similar? Is "McAfee.com VirusScan Online" just protection from viruses via an email or does it do more? How much should I expect to pay for this type of protection? Thanks.

You need a virus scanner. You need a virus scanner that is frequently updated with new virus codes.

Since most people get virus via email, something that integrates with your email program is a must.
