For the same reasons any ethnic American group celebrates holidays from thier former country. They love their heritage and embace it into their American lives.

GREAT QUESTION. My wife's family came from Germany, her GrandPa. When they got here, he proudly said, "we are Americans, NOT GERMANS, we celebrate holidays that Americans celebrate, and none of my kids will speak German.

DUH! We dont. Its just an excuse to drink beer!

I doubt 99 out of 100 US citizens know what May 5th celebrates. Most likely they think its a marketing campaign to sell beer.

I remember as a kid doing the May Pole thing. Never really understood why though. Kinda like May 5th.

Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day although that is a common misconception. 9-16 is actually Mexican Independence Day.

May 5 was the day that Mexican forces defeated a much 'superior' for of French forces at the Battle of Puebla - 1862.

Not completely unlike what happend to the Mexican forces years earlier at the Battle of San Jacinto in April, 1836.

My understanding is it's not a big holiday in Mexico either. It's begger up here, thanks to Jose Cuervo and Corona advertising. Like you say, it is an excuse to drink beer and tequilla.
