I just turned 16 hours on my dk40hst. I trailered it to another property, attatched my 7' frontier finish mower and started cutting some grass. I noticed the rpms dropping off, I slowed down to let it catch up but couldn't get the rpms past 2200. It seemed to smoke a little too. I shut it down and parked it. I have a spare filter at my house and plan to change it on my next trip. I suprised that after only 16 hours my filter is dirty.

One tank of dirty fuel (or water in fuel) can plug your fuel filter. If you can drain water from your fuel filter you might want to try that first; catch what comes out and examine it for silt and water.

Your symptoms are classic Diesel fuel starvation. Other possible causes are a blockage at the bottom of the fuel tank and a failing lift pump (both much less common than a plugged fuel filter).

By the way, you did mean exhaust smoke, right? That too would be consistent with fuel starvation.

Thanks Scott, yes smoke was coming from the exhaust. I can't remember now if it has a drain on the bottom of the plastic bowl that holds the filter.

What rpm did you start mowing? Level ground? It's hard to believe you had bad fuel in just 16 hrs, but it is possible.

I was just under the red dot. I forget exactly what the rpms are there, 2400? For the most part I was on level ground, but I did parallel a hill for maybe 75 feet and the go up it. It wasn't a steep hill or anything I haven't climbed with my ck35, b7100, my zero turn, pick up truck, etc. But, maybe that was enough if I had a little contamination in it. Maybe I should of let it run longer, possibly cleared itself out on its own?

Let us know what you find in the filter. Bring a clear glass jar to pour the fuel from the bowl into...then you can see all the goodies.

I was able to get down to my property today. I changed out the filter. No dirt or crude in the filter housing. I poured the remaining fuel into a white bowl. Very minor specks of dirt, filter looked fine. I installed new filter and turned valve to air. After a few times it fired up fine. I ran it for about 10 minutes and it started doing the same thing. I guess my next step is to pump as much fuel out of tank and refill with new fuel?

Pour that fuel threw a Mr. Filter.

Murph, I have one of those but didn't use it . If I pour it thru the mr filter funnel. Do u think I can reuse it?

Correction: Let me change my comment. I forgot that this is a new tractor. If you've ruled out a clogged filter (from bad fuel you added), and I think you have, get your dealer to fix it. Use the warranty that you already paid for. It is probably a simple problem, but maybe not. If this problem requires serious work, you don't want to be accused of causing it by your continued trouble shooting.

Ignore this: Next, I'd be inclined to disconnect the fuel hose (from the tank) at the lift pump and see if it will gravity-drain with good flow rate. One owner reported crud at the bottom of his fuel tank that blocked fuel flow out of the tank. If the flow is good you can just let it drain into your container, assuming you want to replace the fuel. If the tank drain isn't plugged check the lift pump. It should deliver fuel to the filter at a couple PSI. This is a very simple (and not expensive) pump with a diaphragm, a spring, and a couple check valves. A cam in the engine compresses the diaphragm against the spring (which sucks fuel into the chamber) and releases it (which allows the spring push fuel out). Common failure modes include a leaky diaphragm and sticky/leaky check valves (caused by dirt or gum). If you find a leaking diaphragm check for Diesel fuel in the motor oil.

Hmmm...tank vent clogged? Check the fuel vent hose for a dirt dauber nest. Try running it with the fuel cap loose. It's new, so if you rule out fuel, I think I'd just get it running long enough to get it on my trailer, then take it into the dealer.

With 16 hours on the machine this is the dealers problem, not yours.

I think I'll replace the fuel first, if that doesn't solve the problem I'll have to trailer it the 60-70 miles to the dealer.

I drained all the fuel and refilled with new fuel. Tractor is running fine now. I couldn't find my mr funnel to strain the old fuel (new one is being shipped. Or should I just discard the old fuel?

I'd just get rid of it or use it for other (non motor fuel) purposes. You don't know what's wrong with it (or if Mr Filter can fix it), but there is some problem with that fuel. Diesel is expensive but repairs cost more.

True, is diesel fuel good weed killer?

Get rid of it. The first thing I thought of when you posted was algae contamination. Don't ever by fuel from a mom and pop store unless it is a high mover location. I have fixed a few of these and some of the newer diesels are not happy when this happens, Duramax comes to mind. The injectors do not like to be starved. CJ
