I recently acquired an old Massey MF 88 tractor. My problem is is that I know nothing really about tractors. I am mechanically inclined but for the life of me I can not find the dip stick for the transmission/hydraulic oil. Also I was wondering if the tractor has a diff lock. I am slipping lots and only noticing that one wheel is spinning.

Also is there any where I can get a cheaper service manual for it? My local dealer is asking $100+ and about 6 weeks delivery.

Thanks so much for the help.

Many tractors have a differential lock. It's a foot pedal generally back near the seat. It may be on the right or left side, depending on the tractor. You may not have a dipstick for the hydraulic reservoir. On many older tractors they relied on an overflow port to check fluid level - much like an automobile standard transmission or differential.

If you don't have a differential lock your brake peddles have a lever to disengage the two peddles from working together. It allows you to work right and left brakes separately. When a wheel slips give that brake a little push and the other wheel will turn/grab. Be easy with the amount of brake you give. It can pull your front end around. This is if your tractor has good well adjusted brakes.
Differential lock is much better.
Consider some tire chains. They are pricy but can be found used for a fair price.
