Massey scut 2015 GC1715
Greetings,

I'm seeking some input on a subject I'm thinking many might have . . how to decide what things I as an owner can do compared to having the dealer do.

I've always changed my own oil and filters on trucks, cars, small engines and motorcycles. And the GC1715 is no different and I did that late this fall with 40 hours on the tractor . . using a wix compatible filter and Mobil full synthetic 5w 40 diesel oil.

Here are compatible filters for the Agco dealer filter that I'm told can work:

Agco 72201898
Wix 51360
Mobil 1 - M1-103
KN HP-1003
NAPA 1360

This spring I intend to take the tractor to the dealer for my "50 hour service" that will probably have about 75 hours on it assuming snows still coming. Dealer distance is 125 miles each way with several other dealers much much closer also. Point is . . At least the first time I want to go to my selling dealer because I think they are highly capable and could give me a little education too. Lol. Also I'll arrange it to be an event for the wife with an overnight somewhere fun.

I'll likely will still always do my own oil because I'll do it a little oftener than recommended and I can then always inspect the oil personally.

Because I'm not the richest person nor do I want to be dependent always on others, and don't want to always haul my tractor distances . . I'd like to get an idea of other things I might do myself.

How about fuel filter changing? Anyone have compatible items for this part? How often is typical change time? Any special technical difficulties?

I'm not real excited about hydraulic fluid/transmission fluid changes . . . Mostly because its not something I've ever done or think needs to happen very often. But maintaining levels is fine. And I'm not intimidated by doing things if they serve a good outcome. As an example . . When its winter cold time and I can have my oil changed in the truck for 19.95 . . . Someone else can do it lol.

Sharpeneing blades is long part of my machining background so no sweat there. And maybe I could consider changing gear oil for mmm as a consideration. And greasing is something for zerks that I've already been doing.

My point is . . I think there are many like me . . Not greenhorns but also not auto mechanics either. I'm intentionally not focusing on my skills because many others reading this could then feel comfortable maybe doing some of your suggestions as well lol.

So anyone have numbers for parts and ideas for things I (or others) could consider doing ?

If so you maybe helping answer the same issue for numerous others besides just me lol. Tractors can be both useful and fun . . Especially when you need to make it last alot of years :)

P.S. Goal is not to replace the dealer . . Just be more involved, more aware, and not dependent for everything.

Ill keep eye on this thread as i am in the same boat as you. I think you will beat me to the intervals tho. Either way once warm weather gets hear i will be doing all maintenance myself. I have found youtube to be very resourceful in the past.

While cost savings are always a need for me . . I've always found certain levels of preventive maintenance are both "busy work" on one side but also increase longevity on the other side. And no one is more interested in my tractor running better and longer than me.

But I also understand that good dealers are a equal part of the partnership too. I'll have a small but specific list of things diagnosed for them to look at when I bring my tractor back for its 50 hour service.

And they benefit from my efforts too . . as good tractor owners help their future sales as well :)

Ooklaa, I'm believing that like you and I, others will follow along also . . and TBN has a pattern of having quite a few well versed posters who may have experience and knowledge to offer in the area this thread would be interested in hearing from :)

Axle just curious how many hrs you have now? Mine is it at 13 hrs now.

59. . . . And to think I figured summer would be the busiest time. Nov. 15th I had 40 hours. So now in 2 months of essentially winter I've added 19 more and recognizing we didn't get snow till Dec. 29th. And based on what I have to do this coming spring and summer I can see continuing a 10 hour per month average in 2016 pretty easily.

I think overall the 50 hour service you can easily do at home. I doubt going to the dealer will "teach" you more about how to install a filter. The 50 hour service is in the manual that the GC series comes with as well. The maintenance could be easily done with a few sockets, ratchets, screwdriver, etc... pretty common stuff since everything on the machine is metric.

As far as the other filters.

Fuel

OEM 3608255
WIX 33262
NAPA FIL3262

Specs:
H: 2.717"
OD: 1.378"
ID: 0.492"
Filter: Cellulose 19 micron

Hydraulics Filter

OEM 6258877M91
WIX 57089
NAPA 7089

Specs:
H: 4.801
OD 3.01
Thread: 20x1.5MM
Flow: 8-10 GPM
Filter: Cellulose 23 Micron

Gasket Size:
OD: 2.43"

WIX makes all of the NAPA filters so either or is fine since they are the same thing.

Do it yourself. It's no big deal.

You may "feel" better having them do it, but there is no guarantee, it will be done better. Or, even as well.

Changing the hydraulic oil at 50 hours, is a big enough waste of money, without paying dealer prices to do it.

A lot of time should be spent inspecting hose routing, and wiring for chafing, and damage. As well as, grease fittings that have not taken grease, or have not been greased. You need to do that, to be sure it's been done. If you look hard enough you will find things. You can avoid a breakdown, catching things now. The dealer is not going to spend a lot of time in this step. You can spend all day.

Start at one end, and literally look at everything.

There are lots of threads on TBN, about changing hydraulic oil, oil options, and filter options.

Any good oil will do. About half of us are using Amsoil synthetic, ATH.

There are many threads on TBN, about how this was not a difficult project.

Ray, good advice on looking things over. I will start a thorough inspection on my new Massey.

Ooklaa, I'm closing in on you! House meter shows 9 hours of use-- mostly digging on the ancient junipers.

I vote for DIY. There's no good reason to pay someone else if you are comfortable changing the oil in your car/truck. The dealer won't lose any sleep if you do it yourself. From my perspective it's also a learning opportunity. Sort of like getting to know a new friend. You can start to learn "what makes it tick" and the quirks of each individual. Lastly, you are more likely to notice something out of the ordinary than a dealer employee who sees your machine once in a blue moon.
