I want to paint my tractor but need to clean it first oily and grease what is the best cleaner to use.I will use original paint colors red an grey thanks for the help steve

Personally, I like to use Gunk engine degreaser on sensitive areas, or oven cleaner if I need to be a bit more aggressive. Note that oven cleaner is an excellent degreaser, but it is corrosive (great for removing rust film) so you must be certain to wash all traces of it off with soapy water. For final prep before painting, I like to use a product called PrepAll (made by Klean Strip), but will also use mineral spirits if nothing else is available.

Try this homemade degreaser recipe along with a long handle scrub brush.

Two parts ammonia
Two parts water
One part Liquid soap

Mix and put in spray bottle. Use scrub brush on heavy areas. Not as caustic as oven cleaner. Cheaper than GUNK.

Rinse solution. Repeat if needed. Not as harmful environmentally. You could also use that orange cleaner which you can get at a auto parts.

If your cleaning to paint over it, be sure to use something like a scotch brite pad to scar the paint to give the new paint something to hold on to.

Thanks guys for the help lots of good info this i need to get this job done i luv working on anykind of engines and painting cars.I rebuilt my first turbo chevy 350 tranny came out great
