Posted this in the Massey forum as well but maybe this is the place.

Well I inherited an old early 70's MF12 lawn and garden tractor. I was given the tractor for free. I really wanted this tractor for doing some serious food plotting for deer as it has the 38" 650 rear tiller. This thing could do some serious damage to the ground.

Anyway the state of the machine: Open gas tank and it was clean! No rust. Decided to gas her up and see what happened. BTW this tractor seems to want some serious CCA's to turn over. My run of the mill garden tractor battery doesn't do the job. The engine started and ran well. There is a head gasket leak (no problem to fix).

Now for the bummer. Engaged the hydro tranny and got transmission fluid all over the floor. Pulled off RR tire to get a better look and can't really tell where the fluid is coming from but I'm afraid it's coming from the drive shaft of the hydro-stat. The tranny does try to engage and move the tractor in both directions. The very long belt that goes from the engine back to the hydro also needs replacing. Now I don't know what to do. I'm not the kind of guy who can drop a tranny and fix it. Heck even replacing the long belt back to the tranny looks intimidating. Anybody know if they sell parts for these anymore (like a new hydro)? Do people still repair old birds like these or would they just laugh at me at the repair shop? Any advice, encouragement, or estimates on what the damages might be to repair this would be greatly appreciated.

Check out all your local tractor dealerships; someone will fix it I'm sure. I have found at least 2 that said they will fix anything brought in just in case I come up with something on my Yanmar that I can't handle. Also, ask around with anyone you know who owns tractors. Chances are someone knows a good mechanic that will come to you to fix it.

As far as parts availability I would think they can be found. It is a major brand and it's not really that old:)

MF dealers do carry parts for M12 tho having them fix it might be $$ you don't wanna spend. Dont wanna scare ya but old neighbor of ours had a tranny case crack while using a roto-tiller, dealer told him they was somewhat prone to that.
HTH JJ.

Any pics? Is this like a riding mower with a tiller, or a bigger tractor?
