Hello,
I have recently stripped the LHS rear axle to replace seals and planning to replace axle tomorrow. I was just wondering if there is anything I need to look out for during the procedure. There were six shims in there two in bad shape so I have sourced replacement ones. How will I know I have everything back ok? Once reinstalled do I need to remove the other wheel to check rotation direction. I assume both hubs should turn in the same direction if any help would be appricated the shims worry me a little. Thanks in advance B

G'day sorry I didn't get back to you earlier for some reason your pm just came through:confused3: but if you have got all the shims you should be right you only need to adjust the stack if you are putting a new bearing in. No need to take the other side to bits as for the wheels if you have both of them off the ground then they will actually spin in opposite directions unless you hva the diff lock in. Good luck with it and hows the job hunting going?

Hey Jon,
How are things going thanks for the reply, well I replace the seal and managed to put the axle shaft back in tonight with out to much trouble. I packed the bearing with some fresh grease and replaced shims all six mind you two were damaged but got new ones no trouble. I have only currently 4 bolts nipped up and wheels turn in opposite direction so looking good. I can feel a slight bit of play when checking end play not loud knocking or anything but just slight movement. One question I was wondering about is the location of the shims? On mine they were all the axle housing side of the back plate is this ok or should they be the wheel side if you know what I mean or does it make any difference better to find now before I replace the rest of the retaining nuts. I also need to reline the breaks on that side as the oil knackered them up that will be fun trying to get the rivets in. The little 35X is almost ready for some work. Again many thanks for your help and advice it is very much appreciated. BJ

Hey Murph,
I had fully intended in documenting the whole job but you know yourself great intentions, between comings and going when I get the chance with work I just seemed to forget the camera. Actually thinking about the seal replacement was harder than actually doing it. I will take some pictures and try and share my experience best I can when I’m happy the job has been a success. See I have taken a chance and just replaced the inner axle seal as the bearing and outer seal look ok that said the proof is in the eating once she gets some new oil then I’ll know for sure.
Regards,
BJ

G'day BJ when you fit the linings to the shoes put all the rivets in and use a bit of packing tape or masking tape over them all to stop them from falling out, I have got a proper rivet tool for doing them:p but before I had one I had a couple of bolts of differing sizes welded to a scrap of railway line, that and a ball pein hammer and it worked pretty well.
Just remember when you start riveting dont go overboard or you will crack the lining and I always found it best to work from the middle to the outside.
