My son just purchased a 1970's Massey Ferguson 135 diesel. The second stage of the clutch will not disengage the pto. We have adjusted the 3 adjustment screws on the clutch through the inspection opening to about .060 and the pedal seems to be at the right free play. It still will not allow engaging the pto without grinding. What else can we do. Split the tractor? Any advice?

I bought a 1974 MF 135 and I had to split it. I ordered clutch discs with intentions of using the old pressure plate. Since it all appeared original I ordered a two stage clutch assembly with the PTO clutch already installed. So much easier.
My best guess is that the PTO clutch has reached the end of its useful life. Hopefully your next one will last 40 years. Mine has 53 flawless hours since I went through it. Some folks even pay me to mow with it.

G'day you can take the clearance down to 50 thou but it should disengage where you are, does the clutch disengage with weight on it i.e does the mower stop turning if you put your foot right down hard? It may be that the plate is frozen to the pressure plate .
