Massey 230 front pto shaft removal?

Hi Dave, Sorry for the delay - life got in the way a bit. Looks like a makeover, but I reconditioned the engine because it needed it. I only painted it at our youngest daughter Jennifer's suggestion. She would quite often bring me a coffee and biscuits or cake, and asked me what I was doing, commenting it was a huge job. I appreciated her interest (and refreshments) and would explain it was worn, but would be as fit as, and run, just like a new engine when I was finished. She then replied I should paint it and make it look like a new engine ... an obvious and practical thought for a teenage girl, but delivered so convincingly I just had to admit she was right! I painted it, even though it was by then refitted. I had her help too - she held the starter button while I sprayed the front pulley nice and evenly. As an afterthought, I painted the steering links to improve the overall looks in the engine area. Note ... she drives both our tractors quite confidently - the 135 since she was about eleven years old.

Here are some pics.

As purchased, and during engine work:

The adjusting strap has bends to allow for the alternator's offset lower mount. I don't know exactly what shape the strap should be - this tractor when I bought it had a horrid Motorcraft unit from a Ford almost falling off it. I fitted a normal everyday Bosch 65Amp unit from a Mercedes Benz 280E (in the graveyard down the back) and reshaped the strap a little. It has one bolt through it to the engine timing case. I also added a spacer and a longer bolt. I'll post a pic (I thought I had one) of the upper mount - that will show you how easy the job is. I'm really glad I did that job - the machine has 5 x 55watt lights, but that unit would run about 15 with no trouble. I will do the same conversion to our 135 soon.

Patrick, that's an awesome job and a great story about your daughters involvement. I wish my kids would take some interest or have interest but oh well.
Thanks for sharing, no real need for the pic of the top mount. I've gone as far as I'm willing to go on this thing! LOL

Well I put the suction hose on today, filled her up with hydro fluid and fired her up, runs great and the loader seems to work much quicker and smoother than it used to. I think I will deliver it back to my BIL today! I wish it had a bucket and forks, I could find some work for it around the house :) I'm done with firewood for this year so I don't need it for a while.

Dave, it sounds like she will go for another 30 years! Great to know it's back in action. When you next have it at your place, be sure to bring the bucket as well!
I share your opinion about kids of today having little interest in our pursuits - ours are all grown-up - Jennifer's the youngest at almost 17yrs. We have a son and another daughter who both can also drive these machines. They were taught to be the capable "can-do" type who don't back away from doing things for which others will admire them. Jenny hit a land-mine recently - you might be interested to read the thread:

Happy to be able to say she's improving daily, but quite a long way to go yet.

Patrick, I may not have mentioned it but when my bil got the tractor the bucket (I never saw it) was in such bad shape he gave it away! My son will be 33 in November and our daughter will be 37 in November! YIKES...LOL we have one grandson belonging to our daughter and son in law who is now 9 and quite the boy.
I left a message on your other thread, wish you all the best.

Geez Dave, that bucket must have been rough - even compared to mine! It looked like this when purchased:

After I straightened it with a couple strong steel beams, chains and a truck jack ... I couldn't believe the strength of the cutting edge, :shocked:I thought I was going to break something there for a while! ;) Plus a little time welding up cracks, it looked like this:

That's a complete rear suspension assembly from a MB 300E in it - shows what a good-sized bucket they fitted to them.
It readily lifts it even when it's full of wet clay or sand - surprised me, considering the diameter of the lift cylinders.

He should readily find a usable bucket in a salvage yard for a reasonable price.

BTW, here's a good pic of the upper mount for the alternator.

I had to redrill the two mounting holes in order to move it forward to align the pulleys. The top "bolt" is actually a piece of threaded bar and with a few nuts and washers it all tightened up nicely with everything held in the correct position. Haven't had to touch it in two years.

One last thought: Check the bolts holding the loader frame up under the front axle housing. Mine had only two in it  (both on the left side  ) and the plate looked like this:

Needless to say, ground out and welded all those cracks, new HT bolts with 1/4" thick large diameter washers which I pressed to a slightly dished shape. This was to move some of the force away from the holes outwards to the edges of the washers - not sure how effective that idea actually was. ;)

Amazingly enough all 4 bolts were in there and the holes also looked like that. Luckily (or unluckily) for me the replacement shaft (the correct one) was two inches shorter than the crap they had cobbed in there so I drilled 4 new holes, actually 6 new holes as there was a cross piece for the loader so those holes had to be re located also thus sliding the whole plate backwards 2 inches. I was impressed with how the holes lined up afterwards! :) I did take my time laying them out though.
As I said, I never saw the bucket so I have no idea, I think he wishes he kept it now that he has looked at the price of new and used ones.
