The tie rod shaft snapped, and since it’s welded to the steering cylinder, you have to replace the whole cylinder. Has anyone successfully welded new one on? Maybe cut the broken one off, drill it out and put a threaded one on there? Any other ideas?

Sounds like a good plan since replacement cylinder no longer seems to be available new...Option may be tractor salvage yard though for replacement.... Might try GOOGLE search for tractor salvage yards in Texas...

Hard to determine from your photos, but if you have enough shank distance behind your broken ball joint, you might be able to, just cut the ball off, leaving the shank still welded in. Then, you might be able to male thread it for a female heim joint.
Then just unbolt your mating plate on the axle, and put through a new bolt.
Easiest solution but your shank length and diameter measurements would need to be checked first.(and a die for threading )

Otherwise cut the entire ball joint off flush, and drill/ female tap the cylinder mount plate for a new ball or heim joint.
Or weld one back on, depending on your welding skills

I brought it to a local fabricator/antique automotive restoration outfit, they drilled both sides of the tie rod end, pinned it, then welded it up. We’ll see how long it holds out.

Can’t tell from your picture. Is there a spherical joint in that repair or is that just a fixed bolt?
It needs to be able to freely rotate all directions
