Massey 150 w/ loader hydraulic issues

I have an older Massey 150 ( probably 60's era ) perkins 40 hp diesel ( rounded rear fenders )

Somehow, my bolts worked loose from front loader hydraulic pump causing loader to no longer work obviously.
Tractor was immediately shut down and pump was not run long after noticing fluid on ground.
I took the opportunity to change filter, put new fluid in and now the hydraulics will not work at all.
I have tried to purge lines to no avail. and now fearful that pump is either shot OR perhaps the fluid i put in needs to be a higher viscosity or weight to have hydraulics work correctly. Fluid level is right where it needs to be also.
For some reason, I thought these older tractors ran on heavier weight hydraulic fluid, but perhaps i am mistaken.
Any help or direction is appreciated.

Not sure what you mean about bolts "working loose" Are you referring to bolts that hold the pump body sections together? If so, how did you go about repairing that issue? If you have a front mounted engine driven gear pump, and it's bolts became "loose", then most likely something inside got out of place. If you simply tightened the bolts without removing the pump and inspecting the componants you probably damaged something and that wouls explain why the pump no longer works.

Just remove a pressure hose for a few seconds and see if the pump is pumping.

Just cranking without starting should turn the pump enough to show fluid.

If the pump came loose, where did the fluid come from.

It was the main two bolts which hold the pump tight against front lower frame. Pump runs off the engine pulley with pump drive shaft which is splined / keeper on it.
I did take pump apart, however i could not get the spline / keeper to release to get off pump drive shaft.
I could not detect any internal issues ( not that i would notice anyway ! ) and then reassembled and put the new fluid in.

I have tried loosening the bolts on the bucket hydraulic lines to "bleed" or to tell if it pumping and it does appear to be but not with alot of pressure or ability to lift / roll bucket. The loader acts like it wants to move but just won't.

???? I'm confused also. First, if all that happened was the retaining bolts came loose and the pump became disengaged from the splined shaft, the pump obviously stopped turning thus stopping fluid flow. You should have been able to reinstall the pump and it should run the loader just as before. Where did the oil leakage come from?? Did you break a suction line or a pressure line?? When you took the pump apart and reassembled it, was it a gear pump or a vane type pump and were you sure you didn't loose any parts, springs, check valve balls etc and get all the parts back correctly? if not, that could render the pump inoperable? Can you take some pictures and post them to help clear up this problem. J.J. is more experienced in these matters but I'm trying to figure out what happened also.

G'day what sort of oil did you put in it?? Its possible the pump cant draw up the oil if it is too thick. Loosen the suction hose and see if you have oil there it may have an air lock in it stopping the pump from getting oil.

UPdate from yesterday:
It appears that the prior owner may have broken the pump drive shaft and replaced with one a bit too long.
Upon tear down of pump again, there is excessive interior wall wear of pump where metal pump gear has been pushing against.
This, in turn has contaminated the hydraulic fluid, filter and lines with metal filings. I will now begin to take pump completely off, see if repairable, correct the length on pump drive shaft and flush all the lines / cylinders and finally put fresh fluid / filter back in.
Hope this works and will update upon completion. This may take a while however, as it usually becomes a "Fix a little bit as time allows" type project.

I remember repairing a MF150 with the same problem .
The drive splines on the shaft AND the pump were worn and not being as telescopic as they should be and I would say that with the crankshaft floating and the splines being not to good it put extra pressure on the pump driven gear causing the gear as you say to wear out the end of the pump body, the end plate can be re lapped and reused providing the damage is not to severe.
The tractor has an internal hydraulic filter which is fine enough to remove particles big enough to cause damage to the pump remove it and wash out in solvent it is a fine stainless /brass gauze, just make sure the moulded plastic ends have not gone brittle and are breaking up this can create havoc with control valve spools
hydraulic oil should be around the 60 weight hydraulic specs, Massey tractors are not real fussy when it comes to oils ,within reason.
