Massey 135 Tranny/hydraulic fill cap

The fill cap for my tranny is rounded. Am I looking at the right thing or should I just put vise grips to it and open it up?

Yes, it the one left of the shifters. Clean the dirt from around it before opening so nothing falls in. Used to be a hex for a wrench, obviously someone decided pliers or vicegrips are better. Ha Ha.

The plug on the left is it. Can you file some flats onto it so you can get a wrench on her. Do you have a reason to remove the plug? If the 135's are like the 255's there is a dipstick back behind the right foot board about 3/4 way up the casting.

john, be sure to replace those shift boots which probably allowed the water inside. i've got to replace the PTO seal in mine and going to replace the fluids while I'm at it. i also have new boots for the shifters.

Yep, that's the transmission fill plug, but to drain the hydraulic fluid you'll need to remove the two drain plugs from the bottom of the transmission and differential housings, both being located on the same side as the transmission fill plug. Since yours is damaged, you might consider replacing the transmission fill plug (768300M1) with a new one, which should only cost about $10.

John, you probably have a good chance of finding a replacement cap from a salvage yard online. Probably doesn't cost much either.

The shipping will cost more than a new plug from MF. Last time I replaced boots, they were around $10 each. Go see your local dealer.

Try the vise grips. If that doesn't work, I'd tack weld a hex nut to the cap with my stick welder.
