Massey 135/Perkins diesel alternator

Hi,
My local NAPA just knocked me over with a price of $244 for a rebuilt DR 1100-336, 37Amp alternator. DOes anyone know what else can be swapped in there that will fit the mounting brackets?

I'd be way surprised if you couldn't cobble a delco 10SI or 12SI in there. That's what the bulk of old tractors use. 25$ at most junk yards.. or about 50$ from auto stores.

they are a 3 wire setup.. though can be had as 1-wire usually for a lil more money.

for 3 wire setup, there is a charge stud and 2 spade terminals.. marked 1 & 2.. #2 is sense and loops to the charge stud. #1 is hooked to the run side of the key switch.. IE, something that gets power whent he tractor is on. on a gas tractor you would use a 194 lamp inline with #1 so that it woul dnot backfeed the ignition whent he key was off.. a diesel won't have this problem.. however use of the 194 lamp is still good for 2 reasons.

1, it provides some resistance in line to the vreg so that if the charge wire comes off, the alt will not try to charge thru the#1 terminal.. also.. the lamp will act like a classic idiot light. IE.. lamp on with key on, and lamp off when charging starts ( usually about 400 rpm ).. you can get a trailer marker lamp and stick it right tot he dash and wire the lamp in it inline from ket to #1.

Give IAT a call and ask for Rich. I've purchased quite a few complete alternators and starters from them for our work equipment.

Not only do they have complete units in stock, but they also have just about all of the components. I have a bin full of slip rings, stators, regulators, brushes, etc. from them and regularly repair stuff as well.

I'll bet they'll not only have a new part in stock for your machine, (for lots less than a reman costs locally), but as an added bonus....since you're buying a new part they won't need your core back. Browse through their parts catalog and you'll probably be able to repair your old one, (whenever you have the time), for about $20.

They offer brand-new OEM stuff from Bosch, Valeo, Lucas, Magneti Marelli, etc., as well as the dirt-cheap imported knock-off stuff other vendors sell on eBay and such.

My 1964 MF-135 diesel originally had a generator. A previous owner replaced it with a Delco Remy 12-3 single wire alternator. Here are a few photos of that setup.









The top bracket has the number 3831195. It looks like an MF number, but I can't locate it in my MF135 parts manual.
