Having to rebuild this Perkins 3cyl gas motor. Thought someone might be interested in a few pics of the progress.

I had already taken off the hood and grill before I took any pics, but this is what it looked like. It ran good, but smoked so bad it was unusable without a gas mask! lol This thing was too cheap to pass up, I knew it needed a rebuild before I bought it. The guy was only asking 850.00. Notice the "made to fit" front rim lol. I do have the original front rim, not sure why he bothered to use that rim when he had to original. Will need new rear fenders also.

At the very least it will need the piston/sleeve kit. It has end play in the crank, so it will also need thrust washers. And while Im in there I will be inspecting the main and rod bearings. I havent taken the timing cover off yet, but I did notice alot of backlash in the idler gear that turns the oil pump gear. I may find that the timing gears are worn out too.

While you are at it, if you want to, you can convert it to a spin on oil filter.

1 741922M1 1 (A) Head, Spin-on Filter (Perkins No. 37764251)
2 354505X1 2 (A) Bolt (3/8 X 3-1/2" NF, Hex.) (Perkins No. 0096443)
3 1476041X1 2 (A) Washer (13/32 X 3/4 X 3/32") (Perkins No. 33115126)
4 1447082M1 1 (A) Filter, Oil (Perkins No. 2654408)

Nice, keep the pics coming.

Check with dealers who carry TISCO products (a division of Woods) As recently as 2 years ago TISCO had a complete kit for rebuilding a Perkins (gas and diesel) that was under $500. It included pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, sleeves, ect..... the COMPLETE kit. Perkins engines are among the least expensive to rebuild of any small AG engines you'll find. Shear numbers alone made them cheap to repair.

The gasser is simply a variation of the diesel. Quite a few parts are common to both. Caterpillar now owns Perkins. I'd assume a CAT dealer could be most helpful in aquiring parts, just get a firm hold on your wallet ! :)

Also check an MF dealer, and don't forget your local machinist. We are (still) in the process of restoring our MF 35, which includes a Standard 23c removal, and a 3cyl Perky replacement. Our local machinist was a great help. Spent a little extra and had semi-finished sleeves put in, then machined to finish.

We used a Genuine Perky gasket kit, as well as the seals. A&I/Vapormatic are others you can check for parts and prices.

The block needed a repair at the back where the crank sits in. From what I was told, a clutch rider and no free-play was to blame.

Dang it all! Ran into a problem of a sort last night. Some of the timing cover bolts are siezed in the aluminum and will no doubt break. One already did, and at least 4 more feel as if they will If I put pressure on them. The inner timing housing is available at about 160.00 from what Ive seen. Maybe I can find a good used one cheaper. I really wanted to open that up and inspect the gears while I had it apart, I may be forced to leave it alone for now and just do the sleeve kit.
