Massey 130 purchase, smart or not?

I looked at a 130 Massey with Perkins 4 cyl diesel recently. Smokes very heavy for 3-4 minutes, then calms down to moderate smoke consistently after that.

What are the feelings on causation for this symptom? Obviously, residual fuel comes in when the machine is shut down, then smokes up when pressure ignited upon starting.

I priced rebuild kits in the US, and in England. Around 700 from England, have not found anybody here that has them....yet.

Is this unit worth a shot, albeit at a 2k selling price or is it just too dangerous to expend that much money for what could be a totally shot engine? I just don't have the background in this type of engine,although I've been around oil burners many times before.

What color smoke? White=coolant leak, black=fuel system problems, blue=oil leakage into the cylinders. Can't really diagnose the problem without a compression test on the engine. If the compression is low, engine hp may be way down. Need to put the tractor to work to see if the hp is there.

I'd walk away from this one.

Hello msjanket, if the smoke is coming out in blue puffs then you probably have a dud injector (repair or replace), and if the smoke is black then it may be as simple as a choked air filter that has not been replaced.
HOWEVER get a tractor mechanic to look at this tractor. The mechanic's fee will be cheaper than a dud tractor. Or are you looking for a restoration project?
