massey 1250 glow plugs???

I have a massey furguson 1250 diesel 4wd with loader. when i start eh tractor i get a glow light but have to crank the engine for about 4 or 5 seconds before it fires and then a ton of black smoke blows out for about 15 seconds. is this normal as it has done it ever since i bought it used. glow plugs have about 1.34 resistence on each plug.

any advice please

Sounds about right. Have you tried the throttle in different positions to help in starting?

I have a 1240 and mine does the same type of thing... I found that running the throttle higher helps with the start.. It will put out a lot of black smoke and miss a little on the start but runs smooth after about 10 seconds.
According to the dealer this is pretty normal for these tractors..

I have a '99 1250 I bought new, it has always done the same thing.

I've only got a 1235, but have the same thing. The manual suggests starting the tractor with the throttle half open. Certainly with mine that does mean it fires practically first turn and the black cloud is minimsed!

my fathers mf 1250 does same thing- it blow black smoke upon starting up.

I was thinking the same thing about a possible problem with the glow plugs on my MF1040. I have to preheat the plugs for about 1 min even when its 70-85 degrees outside. Still rolls smoke out for the first couple seconds. After about 10 seconds it clears up, but if the tractor sits more than about 30 min I have to preheat.
