Here's a shot of the trim I came up with. It's really very simple, and I'd like to think, effective.

The concept was galvanized framework and wood filler.

There were a total of five gates, two of them galvanized square material with wood filler.

Then there was the chainlink ones. This wasn't just chainlink. It's nine gauge minimesh with powdercoated framework.

It was a ton of fun, literally.

The big gates are eight feet frame height with a sixteen and a half foot width. I'd guess them around six plus in weight because of the fabric.

Are you building the gates and then sending them off for galvanizing or using galvanized stock and spraying the welded joints with cold galvanizing compound?

I used cold galv. When I left the job the painters were looking at the gates. I understand they're painting them the bronze they've painted everything else.

On some projects I do hot dip galvanizing after fabrication. There are some tricks to that. It loves rust. The acids take care of that in the blink of an eye. But it hates moisture and oils. And since things are done very very hot you have to make sure there are no unvented cavities. The last thing they'd want would be that stuff exploding all over the place because there was some trapped moisture in a section of tubing or pipe.

One of the good things about working with galvanized material is powder coating loves it. So I can make a project out of galvanized material and usually it's ready for the oven. Non galvanized usually requires surface preparation to remove rust or oils.

We used to get some of the stuff we made at a machine shop in Tampa hot dipped. I was the guy who had to drop it off. I didn't stick around long enough to watch 'em do it, I had a couple of buddies that worked a hot dip plant and they had described the "oxide chills" to me and that killed any curiousity I had in the process. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I've thought about using cold gal for a primer on some of the stuff I do, do you think it would be effective?

Zinc poisoning is something to contend with and it happens. Thirty some years ago the college teacher of the welding classes went into some great detail about the hazards of welding galvanized. The biggest thing I remembered was his graphic complaint about how he welded some and then lost ****** prowess for a whole year.

My dad welded the stuff for most of his life and my mother died with a smile as far as I know. She seemed to love him him like he was performer anyway. I now have been welding it for most of mine and haven't noticed any negative side effects in that department.

Of course we all have different tolerance levels to different things. And he might not have been that interested in marital duties to begin with. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Or he might have been just as good a lover as he was a teacher. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cold galv is probably five to ten times the better primer than just metal primer is. I have a philosophy about rust and paint. It don't rust under a run. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Back on the topic of the fence. I got a call yesterday because it seems they're interested in an additional hundred and fifty linear feet of the fence but only six and a half feet high.
