Has anyone here had experience with establishing a colony of Mason Bees? I've read a bit, but its best to ask people that have "been there- done that." What worked, and what didn't?

They're pretty easy. By us the native mason bees are smaller than some we grabbed from the nursery. The larger ones can be almost a little bossy, not what I'd call aggressive though. Generally I've bored blocks of wood, I never clean them like some do. Use a couple of different sized bits and make them deep. Some like to buy the straws and put them in a tube for easy servicing, which we don't do.

We have lots of other ground dwelling bees and a variety of smaller bees that were aplenty this year spreading their joy and pollinating. So leaving some exposed eart at the edge of the yard gives them habitat where you like them. Not many bumbles lately. Strangely this year there were NO honey bees, and then on the Solstice a hive went in to an existing vacant hive we had. That was great to see. A bit late, but it is an insulated hive and we'll feed them honey if the extra long summer doesn't happen.

How do you "feed" them honey? Did you design some sort of dispenser?

Real tiny spoons... So a lot of bee keepers that do it for the honey then feed the hive sugar slurry, kinda of a simple syrup to give them sustenance for winter. Trays, poultry waterers some use. They will glean from about anything I'd think, but need to be able to defend it against yellow jackets. We don't do that and hope to not have to feed honey. In the old days, a hive wouldn't thrive- it wasn't meant to be. Honey bees don't seem to be coming off a good year last year, so to me it is worth a chance.
The hive that just adopted us seems to be a good size hive. It would have been better a month ago so that they could build up their stores. Maybe we're all hoping for an extended summer.
