Marvel Mystery Oil...

This ought to be good.
Anyone use it as a fuel additive, Is it worth it? What is it?
I hear theres a syn blend of it now. The storys I read, people swear by it. Does it have a TBN.

seems like the people on this site dislike it more so than the gardenweb members. I dont care to much for additives, Just wanted to be sure I wasnt overlooking some benevolent quality
it may have possesed.

It is a good product and it did serve a good purpose in its day. Today, more modern techniques have been developed to deal with the problems that Marvel Mystery Oil served in the past. I still use it for some applications, but its use is now limited in scope. Better engine oils, better engine manufacturing techniques, etc. have relegated Marvel Mystery Oil to the back of the shelf. Possibly people on the GardenWeb site are older and as such they have more experience using it, and remember the positive results of a time past. I still use it in my 1964 Corvair to keep the lifter noise to a minimum.

Interesting that you said that, Junkman!! The only time I used it was in my first car, a 1959 Catalina. I used it to quiet the valve lifter noise, and it worked great!! At least we know it works for that!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Pontiac's of that era were sludge manufacturing machines, no matter how much you changed the oil. I had a 1966 Pontiac Bonneville convertible that had so much sludge in the crankcase, that the oil light would come on at an idle. I drained the oil and filled the engine with 3 gallons of lacquer thinner and let it set for a week. When I drained it, it came out in "plops" of sludge. Filled it back up with oil and did a few oil and filter changes over the next couple hundred miles and no more problems. Drove that car all summer and sold it to a friend that drove it for many more years without any problems. Backyard mechanics tricks do work sometimes. Even used Marvel Mystery Oil in it after-wards to keep everything lubricated and moving smoothly.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My Uncle had a '62 Catalina. Wow, what a lifter noise generator that was. Could never get rid of that noise.
The fact that my uncle always used the cheapest oil possible (old school from Brooklyn, NY) didn't help any.
Had many friends later on (in the 60's) that swore by Marvel Mystery Oil.
