Marking location of holes in the pasture

pine had it right...set a waypoint in your GPS unit every time you encounter a hole you want to repair

Depends on the resolution of your GPS unit, a basic Garmin is in feet, if you want to get down to inches the system will need help with a stationary RF transmitter. At least that is how some Ag systems work, like the John Deere's Star fire using a Topcon Transmitter.

Dave

Forgot to add that I like the idea with a weighted flag.

If it hasn't been suggested yet, use pallets. If it has already been suggested, that's a dumb idea ;)

... It is not practical to stop and mark them with a stake, so I just keep on rolling. And trying to go find them later is like looking for a needle in a haystack at times. ...

Why is it not "practical" to stop and mark them with a stake? Sometime what seems to take longer in the short run is not in the long run.

I was thinking the same thing. Stop, mark the spot and come back and fix it right away. There is never an opportune time to fix these issues on a farm. Just do it anyway.

I like the pool noodle idea, cut into short pieces. But I think the survey ribbon idea would work best since you can toss the weighted ribbon from a distance, even in the wind. I would use short (2 - 4") pieces of 2x2 wood with a 2' piece of bright ribbon stapled to it. You could toss those accurately and they would cause no damage to a mower if you hit it later.

The problem I have when bush hogging is HOGS! Wild Hogs! The holes they make cannot be seen from anything. When the tractor drops into one of these things you will not forget where it was. Keeping your teeth in your mouth is a concern! Many of their rooting are several feet deep and cannot be seen until the tractor finds them. When I am able to Bush Hog some of these places is when the weeds and brush have grown so high they hide the holes. I use a 10 ft rotary mower pulled by JD 6420 Tractor. I am not able to cut more often than once a year!

This is a perfect application for gps. A $100 Garmin would do it and get you within 10' of them and you never have to leave your seat to mark them. You could even download and plot the locations on a map if you wanted. Any kind of physical marker is a less desirable solution. We have placed over 2,000 pin flags (metal wire stake with bright plastic flag on top) in the past week at work and I can tell you they have a habit of disappearing or being harder to see than you would think. We place them with survey grade GPS because we need accuracy to the inch but we use a Garmin GPS to navigate back to and find them.

Reminds me of finding the crab pot buoys on Deadliest Catch, that has to be tough to see in bad weather.

I like the GPS method along with a physical marker such as a section of a noodle. Throw down a weighted colorful object and hit the 'add waypoint' button. As bdog said, the GPS should get you within 10ft, then you see your marker and retrieve and fix.

Most GPS have a feature than beeps at you when you get close to a waypoint also. As you drive nearer to the point, it will beep at a preset amount away. Then the GPS will show an arrow and distance from the waypoints nearby.
Accuracy is usually within a meter or so. 10-20 ft for sure.
