Manual hydraulic pump for dump trailer

Hi guys

I'm in the process of building a dump trailer out of a trailer that I built from an old van I had. I have a cylinder already it is a 3x24. I'm looking for a fairly inexpensive hand pump to raise and lower the trailer. I thought this would be cheaper then purchasing a 12 volt unit. I may be wrong. I can purchase the 12 volt units off of ebay for around 300.00. All the manual pumps I have found are running close to that. So is there anywhere any of you know of where I can find a "cheap" manual pump.

After you dump that trailer once you'll wish you had the electric one!! :laughing:

Do you have the P/S pump and starter, from the old van? You could build your own pump.

I agree, get a electric one. Try searching out a power trim unit from a inboard/outboard boat motor like a Mer Cruiser. Make sure your cylinder is double action so it has the extra hydraulic volume needed above and beyond what the reservoir holds.

I thought about going that route. I wonder how difficult it would be to rig up some linkage to be able to pump the jack from the front of the trailer?? I wouldn't want to be hanging out under there while dumping the load, and I don't think there is enough travel to be able to mount it ahead of the bed.

I used one like this on a folding wrecker I built on the back of a 1-Ton truck. Since it was a seldom used function it sufficed, had I used it regularly I would have automated it electrically. I just recently ran a heavy cable back from my dual battery system to my dump trailer so I can dump ALL DAY LONG and not have to charge the dump trailer battery, even works with out the trailer battery. Worth the effort because I don't get caught with a load on I cannot dump. Time is everything now a days. Even Quick attaches aren't so quick any more cause you have to get off the tractor. :laughing:

That HF jack is ok but it is slow. If you are going to use a manual jack try to find one with a dual action pump. It will pump much faster. Finding this type of jack is the hard part. I made some jack stands to jack up airplanes. I looked for a dual action jack but never could find one. I went with the HF but found it is slow and takes many strokes to extend the ram.

I know that dual action jacks are out there just cannot find a distributor.

Take the starter motor apart and install a pulley on the end. Use a V belt to drive the power steering pump all mounted to a bracket you would fab/weld up. You may need a larger reservoir and then simply adapt the hydraulic hoses to your cylinder.

You will need a valve to control up and down of the dump bed but it should work just fine.

Do you have a tractor with remotes? If you do why not just install some long hoses and use the tractors hydro system to do the dumping?
