Which field are we talking about? I never thought this happened on Steppie's patch or over his 'hill'. Did you? What were they shooting at, the sky? Heckuva way to miss your target.

My point was... if I'm at one end of the field, shoot at a groundhog that is sitting in the middle, miss him, then how do I know what, if anything, I hit at the other end???

Difference between whether a shooter or the target is on top of a 'hill' too. Hog hunter I watch on YouTube passes on shots that may go over the horizon on a miss. Did these kids take a hunter safety course? If they weren't shooting cans in the back yard why were they loose in the fields except to 'hunt'? A stray shot might have hit a building or a power line.

A 12 YO kid from across the street shot at a bird on a low tree branch in his front yard with a BB gun and missed. My truck was in his line of fire so he shot it because it was an easier target. I sold the truck 10 yrs later with a big chip in the windshield that was 'too deep' for repair but never spread. So a squirrel is a small target and a tractor is a big one. Kids.

8 and 9 year old kids will often have judgement lapses, sometimes serious ones. IMHO, the parents who let these boys use a .22, unsupervised, at such a young age, are the actual criminals in this event.

When I was in school over 50 years ago the Get Smart Program from the state penitentiary brought several inmates to tell their stories and convince us to keep out of trouble. The oldest inmate among them had been asleep in the car of a group that, had attempted a robbery resulting in the killing of a store employee. He was sent up for a very long term under South Carolina's, "the hand of one is the hand of all statute." The article in the link is the first mention I recall of that law since that talk long ago and I've often wondered whether it was still on the books. Apparently, it is.

It seems like the other day I heard about the trigger man getting a much harsher sentence than the rest of his gang. It must have been in a different state than SC.
