Man killed trying to separate PTO shaft with tractor

Well we know for sure one way thats a bad idea. To bad safety sally was not able to be there. The guy might still be alive.
And what way is that? We have no idea how he had it hooked.

That was why I originally said, it was typical news, mostly just stressing drama... I would prefer something a little more, so we all can learn from that man's mistake.

I presume he had the other end on the PTO shaft on the tractor? Feel bad for the guy and his friends/relatives, but it sounds like an accident just waiting to happen...especially on those older tractors where the PTO sits quite high.

I guess he could have chained the pto shaft to the three point hook up. That would flip it over.

True more info would be nice and helpful. In general though the article might help some of us to thing twice.

Purely speculation on my part, but he probably had a twisted shaft and was trying to pull it out of the outside housing.
I've seen bat wings with twisted shafts,, incredible how much force it takes to pull them apart.. Just about impossible to do on the cutter..

Prayers for his family!

and if he had chained it to the drawbar under the tractors chassis, there is no way for the tractor to flip over backwards.

article said:
NEW ERA, Mich. - A Grand Rapids man was killed in a farming accident Monday evening.

According to the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, it happened at a farm in the 4600 block of South 44th Ave in New Era around 7:20 p.m.

Deputies arrived on the scene and found the 64-year-old -- identified as Gary Mills -- had been operating an older, Oliver tractor on a family member's farm.

It appeared to deputies that Mills was trying to expand a power take off shaft on a mower and had it chained to a tree and to the tractor in an attempt to pull it open. During this time, the tractor flipped over and Mills was killed in the incident.

Assisting at the scene were the Oceana County Sheriff's Office, M.S.P., Shelby-Benona Fire Department, Life EMS and the Oceana Sheriff's Victim Services Unit.

What drama was stressed in this story?

It was pretty clear and concise.

My thoughts are the tractor flipped like a rotisserie. Obviously purely speculation but if he was pulling just the shaft and the other end ws locked on the tractor with a chain through the joint and he pulled ahead and the back wheels came off the ground and the PTO was engaged.

What if he engaged the pto by mistake and it spun that would flip him like a chicken on a rotisserie grill.

In other words because of lousy reporting we're left with WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF, WHAT IF,

For those whiners that wonder why we need and want to know more info, it's so none of us do the exact same thing. It's called accident reconstruction, it's called education, it's called learning from other mistakes, it's called being aware, it's called don't DO THIS!
Instead the moron reporter pukes out the mimimum number or words and leaves us all with more question, stupid speculation like mine,
and a huge sense of "left hanging"

NO not clear at all!

Tell me what is clear about this?

" During this time, the tractor flipped over and Mills was killed in the incident."

1) How did the tractor flip?
2) Did the tractor flip froward or side to side
3) Was he on the tractor?
4) Was he standing next to the tractor and using his hand to press the accelerator?
5) was he on a hill?
6) was the ground level
7) was these snow and ice on the ground?
8) Was he killed instanlely from the tractor or did he lay there for a week before help arrived
9) Was his leg pinned and died of exposure and if found earlier he would be alive and you all should go ahear and use his method just have two people?
10)Did he hit and engage the pto which caused the tractor to spin on it's axis.

Seems you're the ONLY one on the planet that seems to be "pretty clear" on this story, while the rest of us are not at all clear what happened
and have just a few questions - obviously!

There certainly are details missing that those of us that understand the complexities involved would appreciate knowing. I was surprised the big city news station knew enough to report the PTO shaft was involved, I would give them credit for that. In this world of sound bites there are often unanswered questions in most news covered. Gone are the days of journalists of days gone by. The reality probably is that a tractor flipping is going to get about 30 seconds of the city audiences attention span and that is about what they did.

EDIT... they gave it 17 seconds in the clip and about as much in the write up.

There seems to be a lot of information missing. Keep in mind that is an area with a lot of agriculture and farm machinery. Local news should pick up on that and report in a way that other machinery users can learn from as to what not to do.

I can't really see how this happened if he was connected low, on level ground and doing a straight pull. If he wasn't, we should know that.

There was a similar thread here not too long ago about a guy using a pick up truck to repeatedly slam a stuck shaft. I cringed every time it came back into 'New Posts' thinking we'd be reading something unfortunate.
