I allowed autopayment ONCE; they never abided by the terms of the agreement, taking various sums of money out randomly whenever they felt like it. It took me 4 years and a lawsuit to get my $1700 back. Never again. I will pay a year in advance if that's an option; but will never give anybody permission to take money out of my checking account. I won't even use a debit card; if I get scammed then all of my other payments are at risk, and there is no recourse to recover the money.

One stipulation of the newspaper I mentioned is that they can track my location; that's not something I will ever willingly accept.

Uggg.....never heard of that mess happening. I got just about everything on autopay. Been real lucky I guess. Zero troubles but a little concerned now.

It was a little bit different situation, but enough to make me leery about doing it again.

Bummer. Ever since we had that one problem with one company (still can't remember what it was), now when we cancel an account that has auto payment, we fill out a stop payment order form at the credit union in advance and that's that. Haven't had a problem since. It beats writing checks every month.

Our paper takes one year subscriptions, both for the printed product and digital subscriptions. Customers get a discount by paying far in advance, I think at 6 months and 1 year levels. If you take the printed product, you automatically get a free digital subscription. But that doesn't apply to people that are too far out to get a printed product delivered.

They do mail delivery as well, but that costs $$. I was surprised how many people still take mail delivery of the printed product. Mostly older well-off folks that still like the feel of the paper in their hands.

Last week I was talking to the publisher of a small paper out in the plains and he said they're considering contracting with the post office for same day delivery and eliminating their longer motor routes. The prices are getting competitive.

Our weekly paper back home has always been delivered by mail, they never had carriers.

Yep. Weekly pubs can do that because they have more lenient deadlines. Bi-weekly, 3 times a week gets tighter. Daily deadlines are super tight, especially for newspapers that have outsourced printing to regional printers. Their deadlines are a lot earlier each night (or day for evening papers) to allow for transportation times from the remote printing plant. Many don't get late local sports scores in or evening college or pro sports scores. Wasn't a problem when they had their own printing press.

We used to get our weekly paper by mail. Usually it came the day after it was put in the racks in town. Pretty good service I thought.

The “used to be daily” paper we had was good about getting their Sunday paper in the news rack in front of their office by 8pm on Saturday night. Their delivery drivers hit the streets with papers about the same time. Our Sunday paper usually hit the driveway between 11pm and 1am Saturday night/Sunday morning.

If you had an ad coming out or were really interested if a certain story was going to show up a lot of people would make a trip to get a copy from the news rack.

My wife’s nephew was the editor so I could always just ask, but it was better to actually see it for myself sometimes.

Seems every bit of media in this country is owned by a few corporations, government (CBC), is highly PC and all left leaning. Heck, it's at 90 degrees and nailed to the (laninate) floor. Not interested in any of it.

Our newspaper news and sports deadlines were 11:00pm and we didn't start printing until 11:30pm, even later if there were high schools sports, or Notre Dame was playing. They'd start getting papers to packaging by 11:40. Ads were inserted into the paper, then skidded off and trucked out to distribution warehouses. The carriers would pick them up around 4am, and we had a guarantee that your paper would be at your door or in your tube by 7:00am weekdays and Saturday, 8:00am Sunday. Now that they outsourced printing, they cut the deadline way back, so evening sports scores don't make it in anymore. They kept the same delivery schedule.

If you want to stop/start or vacation hold your paper, as long as you got the call in by 5:00pm, the change would take place that night, on the fly.

It was a family owned newspaper until this year. They just sold all of their 8-10 newspapers to a conglomerate a few months ago. Still same people working there, though. Good folks. Keeps the local governments on their toes, no matter the party. Exposed a lot of stuff over the years that people generally didn't know what was going on.

It's rated right down the middle as far as conservative/liberal goes. Funny how if you print a story about cake, 35% of the people will complain loudly that it's too bland, 35% will complain loudly that its too sweet, and the other 30% will just roll their eyes and shake their heads wondering what the $%&^!! is wrong with people arguing about cake.
