Man Dies After Falling Off Tractor, Being Hit by Tire

Tragic story here, but odd at the same time. Hard to imagine how the man could have fallen off his tractor just by driving it into a garage so he could work on it?? There are no pic's at the link.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a man whose tractor had a flat tire was killed when he fell off the machine as he tried to drive it into his garage for repairs.

Charleston County deputies told media outlets that the victim was struck and killed by the left rear tire Sunday afternoon.

Investigators say the tractor was still in gear when his body was discovered about an hour after the incident.
The coroner's office identified the victim as 52-year-old Thomas Bussey.

Aren't some tractors mounted from in front of the rear tire and have the gearshift lever sticking up right in front of the seat? If that's the case here I can see him accidentally tripping on gearshift when he was dismounting and falling off and knocking it into gear at the same time. I have heard of a guy who caught his boot lace on a shifter like that and darn near took a nasty spill before he caught himself.

Reminds me of a small JD dozer death I read about. Same thing. Inadvertently operating the gear lever getting off!

I almost succeeded in killing myself in the last couple of weeks. Just a result of trying to save time and that horrible short term human memory issue! Or not making the (dangerous) connection between two seperate but related sets of information.

It's rarely ever just one thing that leads to disaster!

If there were no witnesses, how do they know he fell off and didn't accidently start it in gear while standing in the wrong spot?

Maybe he was standing and hit the door header?

Maybe he was standing and hit the door header?

Or half-standing reaching out for something or pushing up the OH door, maybe with his foot on the clutch or HST pedal. Foot slips, he loses his balance and falls off the side of the operator station.

Hard to say without pics and probably don't want to see those either.
