Making Money with B2910

I need to make some money with my B2910. That is one of the reasons I bought it was to make some money with it and use it for myself. Any suggestions on what I can do to make some money with it?? I don't have a backhoe attachment yet but that is my next thing in line to buy. I have the following attachments as listed below and can probally get a post hole digger. Any ideas would be helpful. I thought about running an ad in the paper but not sure what to say.

I know there are others that can answer this better than me, but
I'll throw in my nickel.

This topic has come up several times over the years. I toyed
with the idea of doing some side jobs to get some extra cash. What
it usually comes down to is those dubious terms "liability" and
"insurance". /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

That killed it for me. I still do some work for my neighbors, but
only as goodwill. They usually pay me back with food (or drink).

I have no idea how much insurance would cost, I know my
business insurance is $500/yr. But that does not include
operating equipment.

Mowing lawns, those big grounds. Check with apartment complexes, cemetaries, companies, etc.

With a post hole digger, well unless you're building the fence I'm not sure of the demand you can rent those cheap enough and of course you need to fill that post hole pretty quick (rain, debirs, etc).

Grooming grounds for landscaping, where new homes, etc have been built.

Get insurance! If you bump a car, house, person you are at fault. If you hit an underground water line, power line, cable line, telephone line, or gas line.. again you are at fault and it's huge dollars to roll out a utility repair crew and there are underground wires/cables in more places than you'd ever imagine (even in the country).

Buy a bush hog. Clear right of ways, fields, pastures. Get a plow/disc or tiller (to me a lot more money making opportunities here than with a backhoe and cheaper too) to do gardens, etc.

Clean out barns. If you have too shovel stalls into the FEL and then load/move the manure.

A lot of possibilities. Becareful and get insurance.

The insurance is very important, especially in the "trial lawyer world" we live in!
I hope it will not be a problem for you getting insurance considering your young age. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
From reading your posts, you obviously have a lot of tractor knowledge - hopefully lots of experience as well. It might be necessary for the insurance to be done through an adult with you covered on the policy /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

That insurance covers the machine. What you need is business liability insurance and there may also be some local permit/licensing requirements depending on where you live. Be sure to check this out carefully for your own protection, as well as your parents' and customers' protection. An insurance agent that deals in business insurance can answer your questions about that topic. Your local township/municipality office can help with the latter.

If you were just mowing lawns as many teens to with a push-mower, there really wouldn't be much to worry about. But you're looking to do work with "real machinery" and the rules are a little different.

I think brush hogging is probably the most needed tractor service. Also less risk out in an open field. Good luck with your venture. It is refreshing to see an ambitious young person these days.

My mom has a construction business and it is insured with the Backhoe, Loader, Dozer, and Skidsteer. It is already insured and ready to go. Trust me.

You will need to have liability insurance. I have what is called light landscape insurance it covers me down to 3 feet below grade, damage to attachments, and coverage up to a million dollars. cost me $550.00 a year. You need this. Just one little mistake could cost you more than you could imagine.
and use "dig-safe" or what ever the company is named in your area to mark out all utilities before you dig. this is a free service. It is better to know what is there than just digging and hoping.

Tractorteen You may still have a liability issue with you being 15 years old. Will the insurance cover you as an operator of a $20,000 plus machine? Will your customers accept the potential liability of letting a 15 year old operate this kind of equipment for hire on their property? I suspect the kind of "contract" you will be able to offer is limited to a verbal one, due to your age. I'm not saying you are not capable, but some people are going to have concerns over liability issues.

Don't want to rain on your parade but these are issues that must be addressed before you go "into bussiness" for yourself or even work for others. In our county no one under 16 years of age can operate a gas weed wacker if working for a school system, state/county summer employment program, state park etc.

Check out the liability issues before you start is my suggestion. Good Luck.

You know, it is really a shame to say this (because from what I hear TractorTeen really has it together and I would expect he is an excellent operator), but this is a good point. There are limitations to the types of contracts that minors can engage in. In many states they simply cannot - minors are not considered competent to do so (silly in many situations as there are plenty of "adults" that shouldn't, either).

The existing insurance policy should be checked to make sure that it is valid when a minor is operating the equipment. If this is the case, however, then go for it! With a valid buisness grade (this *must* include liability!) insurance policy and assurance that the operator is covered then you're ready to start working.

I'm sure impressed with what TractorTeen is doing. I think it is great that he's working towards establishing a money making enterprise. Good luck, Knowles!

My brother in law works for a big house builder. They have vacant lots for future houses. These lots need to be mowed with a brush hog or his boss is charged by the city when the city mows them and fined for good compliance in the future. This is the situation for all the developers. He told me that he pays 40 dollars a lot for someone to come in and mow often he has difficulty finding someone to do the job. Potential to do numerous lots in this type of venture in my area, also potential to hit junk and boards with nails.
