My local CNH dealer has a 70's era diesel 3000 with PS on his lot, and for 500$ more next to it, a TC33 with a few hundred hours on it and a box blade.

Go figure...

Good marketing? That 3000 probably varies in price depending on what it is parked next to!

there's a 1981 Ford 7700 at the local New Holland dealer's lot for $11,000. not sure the hours on it, but looks to be in good shape. no cab or loader. i asked him if he had many people interested in it and he told me that i was the first he'd seen spend that much time checking it out(i walked around and looked it over for about 30 min.). if it had a loader, and i had the money, home it would come with me!

oh and by the way, i didn't spend that much time looking at the new tractors on the lot because he didnt have the size i was wanting to look at(no TT's or TN's). i was too busy looking at that old 7700

That actually seems kind of spendy.. the 5xxx/6xxx/7xxx/8xxx all seem to go for 6000-8000$ here... at least everything up to the 10 series.. not the II or S.. etc.. .. unless they have pretty good amount of hours on them.. etc.

i had no idea what good pricing on them would be because i hadnt shopped around. the tractor did appear to be in good shape, not just marginally good, but seemed like it was used on a farm and taken care of. didnt see any rust or leaks anywhere, rubber seemed about 70% all the way around, had a good looking canopy on it that wasnt all bent up and beaten up. only real flaw i could find, and this is being nit picky, was the guage glass was shattered and you couldnt read anything. i probably could have talked him down some if he felt like i really wanted to take it home. i just figured it was a good buy on a 85hp tractor that was in good shape. TONS of life left in the ol' girl.

Yep.. in general.. the big iron is cheaper 'per pound/hp' than a cut / scut.. etc.

So what I'm hearing here, is I'd be better off rebuilding my 67' 4000 then investing in something new that is equivalent in size?

Probablly cheaper anyway..

probably sink 3K$ for a decent refurb of that machine.. and a the 3cyl 4000 is a quite capable machine at that..

It's probably because that Ford 3,000 was made in the good ole days when tractors were tough!!! I had a gas one most of my life. It was my dad's and I used it in the 70's as a teen. I traded it on my TC55DA in Oct 05. I probably gave it away!!! Man, that dude was tough!!!! You couldn't tear it up! The hydraulics was finally needing overhauling and honestly I couldn't find anyone these days who knew how to fix it right so I traded it. Them was the good ole days!!!

Hyd overhaul on an old ford smaller than the 5000 is about a 4-5 hr job in your garage with a couple hundred bucks in parts... no biggie.
