Maintenance of Rotary Cutters Vs Flail Mowers

/ Maintenance of Rotary Cutters Vs Flail Mowers #21
I must be easier on my mowers than others. I was never happy with the cutting performance of my RC (Deere LX6). I had a Caroni flail in use for about 4 1/2 years and all I had to do was replace one set of belts, and remove wire from the drum a few times. My Woodmaxx flail has seen 2/3 of a season and no maintenance except hosing it down, and removing rope once. But I'm not trying to cut down trees with a mower or go super fast. The Woodmaxx has a slip clutch on the PTO shaft, which I expect will result in longer belt life than the Caroni (where belt slippage was the only outlet when the drum got stopped).

The maintenance subject is all about personal perspective.

I've went thru a set of belts and two bearings in two years with my flail.

My two Rotary Cutters have had nothing replaced. One has been in use 8 years. One has been in use 5 years.

The flail will leave a better cut but at a price. So each owner has to decide what that's worth. They both have their place.
