Has anyone who is outside of Maine registered in the state? I'm a PA resident and I'm thinking of a registration for Maine. I only use the trailer a few times a year and mostly for Boy Scouts dragging all kinds of stuff to summer camp.

PA annual inspections are $45 and the registration is another $14 so its definitely a good deal.

Worried that PA DOT will target PA trucks with Maine tags and rack you over the coals if you have anything wrong on the trailer.

They probably will be more critical; they seem to be here in NY. Just keep the trailer legal, that's all. Best time for a Maine trailer registration is at purchase, you save the sales tax, or at least in NY one does.

Will Maine send your plates and stickers to PA?

Yes they will. Just about all the trailers I see locally have them. Especially the horse trailer folks.

Yup, us Mainers get bent over on every other reg, meanwhile everyone in the country registers their trailers here. I don't understand it, but go for it. It's the only thing cheap here.

I would think other states might have a problem seeing their revenue going to Maine...

Ain't that the truth, $600 a year to register the wife's new Toyota and $60 for 5 years to register my new 7000 lb. trailer.

Here is the email response I just got from the State of Maine...;)

Thank you for contacting the Secretary of State's office. Yes, Maine does register non-resident trailers for non-commercial use. If this is something you are interested in, please contact the Registrations Unit directly at (207) 624-9000 Ext. 52151.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Sincerely,
Therese Cahill Low

This doesn't make sense. The way I see it, you can only have one legal address at one time, and your driver's license and vehicle registrations should be for that address, in that state. What am I missing here?

Maine is to trailers what Delaware is to Corporations...

$60 for 5 years isn't bad for a 7K trailer. That's only $12 a yr.
Here in NY my 7K trailer is $60.25 per year for registration plus another $10 for annual inspection. My gooseneck was registered in Maine before I sold it. If I remember right, the total cost for a 7 year Maine reg was about $100.

It gets better on light trailers, my 2K snowmobile trailer cost $25 for 5 years. It seems to be almost a well kept secret, I've had fellow Mainer's ask me why I have a different plate than them. I believe if you go to your town office and register a light snowmobile trailer it cost $12 year verses the $5 a year for the semi-permanent plate with a minimum 5 years. But to do the semi-permanent you have to go to the motor vehicle office in Augusta, but not the one where you would get a drivers license, the place on Hospital Street. They made it confusing to get that cheap price.

New Hampshire has a nonresident motor vehicle registration & doesn't charge or care about sales tax. MikeD74T

I registered my 20 foot 10k Cross Country with Maine this summer.
MBI Trailers handled the transaction for me. They're on the web.
Another is Staab Agency.

The cost with MBI was $90 with a five year semi-permanent plate. In NY the yearly fee would have been close to that. The only hitch is that the trailer is still titled to the previous owner. Maine does not title trailers of this sort. IF I wanted a title, I would need to title the unit in NY (paying both sales tax and a title fee) and then send the documents to Maine. I ended up sending copies of the bill of sale, and the sellers NY title to them with my request.

If I ever sell it, I transfer it with the title signed by the previous owner.

As previously posted, if you're going to play this game, be absolutely certain that the unit is 100% and that your load is rigged to spec. Nothing like a Maine plate to p*iss off the man, I'm told.

I've been being gouged by NYS for 52 years now. If I find I can find a way stick it to them and do it leagally, I jump at the opportunity.

Jon
