Maibox baseball problem and worse

My parents dealt with this and the kids were actually caught. The local authorities allowed the parents of these kids to beg for mercy so that their lives were not ruined over petty vandalism. My parents and the neighbors, at the kids and their parents expense, got their mailbox replaced, compensation for previous mailboxes, and a lot of yard work and painting done. Paint also at the expense of the kids. This was 10 years ago and I doubt these kids have yet finished the community service given them by the local JP given the amount they were served. No record, but man did they work it off.

I think the punishment was appropriate.

I 've read some good ideas here and some a little way out . Unfortunately most of the good ones are not workable in my property location situation. But they have given me this idea :

Since I 'm a creature of habit, I leave my house for a short time every morning at 7:30 . I check my mail shortly after the expected delivery time. I 'm gonna remount my box to the post in such a way that it can be easily removed from the post .

Check my mail in the p.m. and remove box . Remount the box in the a.m. when I leave . Repeat as needed . If I slip up and forget to remount box it won 't matter if I miss a day 's mail . It will come the next day. I don 't care if they pound away on my post.

Added benefit is it may just aggravate the heck out of them . Not worried about this escalating their action ' cause plastic boxes are cheap . May even just mass produce a bunch of disposable luan wood boxes for repeated destruction . Retired and have the time . I might even just fab a completely removable post and box. That aught to really p.o. them .

Sounds like a good compromise. If you do start removing/replacing box and just leaving the post, think about taking the post and remounting on a spring at the bottom. That way, post will just spring back. Also think of taking some flat iron or angle iron and bolt on sides that they hit. Give a little jar to the swinger so they can work on improving their grip.

Mount a piece of angle iron vertically facing traffic so that the side sticks out and it could make a nice dent in a bat...
Also, after the bat bounces off of the angle iron and into the back window/side of the vehicle a couple of times, they might take a hint.

We have had a brick/stone ailbox for at least 15 years and never heard one peep from the Post Office. It is not reinforced with steel or anything ... just block. But, the Post Office has no idea what is inside and has never asked.

It appears that this is just an Ohio law. I thought it was a federal law. Here's the quote for Ohio.

Mailboxes must also be USPS approved and constructed entirely of plastic or of lightweight galvanized steel and must be of regulation size.

I like the idea of the sacrificial wooden faux mailboxes. I can just see them pull up to a row of mailboxes and have to decide which is real. Would be even funnier if you stuck one of those small explosive targets in them so when the bat hit the box explodes.

That would get my attention!

Or, a very long(10-12ft) swinging horizontal arm, so the mailbox is far into your property when not expecting mail.
