Hey everybody,

Just a question about a job I took on. (maybe I shouldn't have) I have to dig out about 30 tree stumps with the tree trunk diameters ranging from 5-10 inches. The bigger ones (15 plus inches) I'll have to grind down due to lack of access.

The equipment being used is a Mahindra 2015 gear, with a Woods B-70X hoe. Have any of you used a similar set-up for stumps? I think it ought to be beefy enough. That B-70X has some awesome bucket curling force.

I'd appreciate any advice in the best way to attack a stump, with preferably minimum disturbance to the surrounding area.

I know this sounds like a stupid question. I've taken out stumps before, but I'm open to anybody that can teach me something!! Thanks.

I think if this was moved to the General Owning and operating forum you would get more/better responses. It is really a general question and not brand specific in my opinion.

I've got the same "ho" on a 3215 and have been digging 'em out lately myself. On the smaller trees, 2" to say 5", I first get my bucket behind the tree and loosen around the roots a time or two on each side and then snatch it out and tote it off. As the stumps get larger in diameter I go out from the stump on each side until I can rip the roots but leave the dirt and roots back in place. I then go behind and do the same. If needed I rip at the front but often that isn't necessary. I reposition the tractor if needed as dictated by the root growth. I pull at the stump to check the tension and pull it out when it feels loose enuff. I've pulled out some pretty large oak stumps lately without much difficulity.

Thanks for the tip OFFY. I know this qualifies as GENERAL info, but I wanted to see how folks with similar equipment were making out with jobs like this. It sounds like it shouldn't be that difficult a job afterall.
