Mahindra 485DI

I recently purchased a Mahindra 485DI and the power steering is stiff. Is there any test that can be done to see where the problem might be. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

That will depend on your definition of "stiff". On my 5005 the steering pump is in tandem w/ the hydraulic pump. At low RPM the pump will not be putting out much pressure and therefore not assisting as much. Also, I always TRY to be rolling just a bit when I turn the wheels as I believe it to be easier on the steering/front end components.
Also, have you checked the fluid level? If it is setup like the 5005, the back part of the hyd pump is for the powersteering and it has a separate sump up on the left side of the motor.

The steering on 485 is virtually impossible to turn while sitting still, even at higher RPM'S. It does turn fairly good while moving across the field. I have checked the fluid in the reservoir,bleed the lines, and cleaned the strainer in the reservoir and this did not make much improvment. I am getting fluid out of the lines at the steering cylinder with the lines broke loose

Sounds like you might have a faulty pump or PS cylinder. You should be able to take one finger at idle and turn lock to lock. I believe you can have the pump's PSI checked without removing it from the tractor. BobG in VA

I have a 97' Mahindra 485 DI also. I absolutely love it. It has 1089 hrs on it now, but 879 when I bought it back in February 05'.

Anyway, my tractor is VERY easy to steer, even when the engine is idling. Can steer it with one finger. My tractor is in extremely good shape........Would definitely buy another Mahindra.
