I have a 2004 Mahindra 4110 and it won't go into 1st or 2nd gear. 3rd and 4th work fine. So do the High, Medium, and Low ranges.

I was running my roto-tiller when this problem occurred. Everything was working fine. There was no pop or bang, and I didn't run over anything strange.

I have checked under the tractor and there is nothing obstructing the movement of the gear shift lever. It simply won't move over into 1st or 2nd gear positions.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what may be wrong and how to fix it?

Thank you for your assistance.

Mike.

What gear were you running in when it happened?

Citydude, I think I was in Medium Range, 4th gear, reversing.

Humm, that's a puzzler. I know if I don't get fully engaged in a gear, the shift lever is pretty stiff when trying to shift it out of that gear. I've never had the issue of not being able to get it in gear though. Wish I had a fix for ya....

Does it grind when you try to put it into gear? Possibly a bent shifting fork

Thanks all for your suggestions. I had a friend with many years of tractor experience come by and take a look. At first he told me I was probably going to have to take it to the shop, but then he got on, started playing with the gear shifter feeling it out and working his magic. He jiggled it, pulled up on it, wiggled it, while rocking the tractor back and forth with the clutch. And, presto, 1st and 2nd gear came back. Who knows what the issue really was... I'm just glad it's fixed.
