Mahindra 4110 Throws Rod -- Repair Help Needed Please

Hi All,
I'm new to the site and appreciate any help you all can offer. Thanks in advance.

I have 2002 Mahindra 4110 with about 1500 hours and it threw a rod, I believe. The engine block is clearly cracked.

Mahindra dealers are few and far here in Central Virginia (Gordonsville). One opened nearby 2 years ago, but they gave up their dealership b/c Mahindra wanted them to buy and then sell more tractors than they wanted. Yet, they say they might be able to help. Their mechanic came by and offered preliminary info. While they are still looking at options and specific pricing, their preliminary research is a new engine can't be purchased, b'c it didn't have emissions controls on it. (This was left in a voicemail and not sure I understand this, but will follow up). And a new block alone cost over $5,200, excluding labor. This seems super high to me. Anyone know better? Will other engines from Mahindra fit? Other manufacturers' engine fit? Anyone know what the value of my tractor might be? It has a loader bucket. I've been hard on it and it's in less than ideal body condition.

I believe that 4110 engine was built by Daedong, aka Kioti. That may give you another source for a block. Could another engine be adapted? Sure, but generally it requires quite a bit of modification.

Jake, I have heard that from numerous sources, but I have not confirmed that rumor. I can see the EPA wanting to kill all the old tractors and making it as tough as possible to replace engines. Yet if a guy has an older tractor, surely he should be able to buy a replacement engine!!! So the short answer, if it isn't too late to call this short is....I don't know.

The block lists for about $5200. It is called a block assembly, but the picture does not show it as a short block. The dealer would need to call his parts rep and find out. Surely at $5200 it ought to be a complete short block with crank, pistons, etc.

I'd think long and hard about putting that kind of money in a rough tractor. Yet it isn't worth much with a busted block either and a new similar tractor is over $20k...so it is a tough decision.

Maybe and this is JUST maybe, could the block be welded? If the throw on the crankshaft isn't beyond grinding, the engine might be salvageable with a new connecting rod. I would go over the block and crankshaft condition with "Good and reputable engine machining shop". Even if you had do a little traveling the get the parts repaired I would think it would be worth the effort. I seen a sign in one of the engine machine shops that read "The difficult will be done immediately and the impossible will take a little longer" bjr

tractordata is a great resource, but in this particular instance I am pretty sure they are wrong.

This sort of confiscatory pricing is irritating, but common in the tractor world. I have a chipper with a 125 HP Cat engine. I thought I needed an ECU for it. This little control unit weighs 2 lbs and is the size of a sandwich. $2800 for the ECU, $550 to flash it. I could not believe it. So I said "just sell me a manual", and that would have been $560...for the paper manual, and then they do not allow you to buy the code reader with software to diagnose... I'd yank that thing out and install a 4BT Cummins before I'd pay that. With some persistence, we fixed the problem without needing an ECU. So I feel the pain as sometimes I am on the selling side of parts like this, sometimes on the buying side!

The only time prices seem to come down is when there are so many of a certain model built that aftermarket companies get involved. Take an old International from the 70's. A rebuild kit with crank, liners, pistons, etc is probably $1000 +/-. Try all of that with a late model compact tractor and it will be triple.

Some of the pricing is due to volume. Common car parts are cheap. Rebuild a Chevy 350 for about nothing, or just buy a new crate engine complete for half the cost of this tractor block. But, there are millions of those engines.....

Thanks. They are who I purchased it from. While I'm not here to talk bad about anyone, I can safely tell you that I would NOT buy anything from them. I know they are a Kubota dealer now, but they weren't then. The facts are that they first sold me a grey market Kubota -- one that apparently they brought into the country in pieces and assembled here. But the pieces weren't up to American standards. I learned this only after I took it into my local Kubota dealer who wouldn't touch it. They couldn't -- none of their manuals matched up. Even the wiring was different. Only after I raised holy **** with Kubota and Beverage were they willing to take it back. And the only way I was able to leave was with the Mahindra. Now I'm more surprised than anyone that Beverage is a Kubota dealer....
