My wife and I are considering the purchase of a new tractor this fall. After some research on line I went to a local dealer that sells Deere, Kubota, and Mahindra to ask some questions. It didn't take long for me to make the assumption that Kubota sales must have a higher commission. Anyway, without looking at New Holland I am debating between the Mahindra 4110 or Kubota L4400. I will be using the tractor for grading my long, hard packed gravel driveway, winching wood (I'll start a new thread sometime for Farmi/Fransguard questions), moving around snow, and generally just moving dirt. Most of my property has steep grades but logging roads are all in. Any recommendations between the L4400 or 4110? I like the 12x12 of the 4110 and the draft control. From the spec sheets it also appears that the 4110 is wider (better stability). I don't think the salesman was comparing apples to apples except for the bottom line.

just for clarification, are you looking at the hydro L4400 or the gear model?

You are really comparing a Tong Yang Moolsan 4110 to a Kubota 4400. In fact, there is nothing "Mahindra" about the 10 series or 15 series for that matter other than the sticker. I guess the same can be said for the majority though. From a personal standpoint, I'm leery of contract tractors and the support they will get down the road. That is not to say they are not great machines. Just a personal opinion and something that weighed in my decision. Drive them and get the one you like best. You will know which one is for you when you drive them. Both should last you quite a while.

Looking at the L4400 gear model. I know that the ground speed starts at 0mph with the HST but I'd rather stick with gear.

The salesman did make the statement that Mahindra parts were sometimes hard to get with much longer lead times compared to Deere or Kubota. Any feedback for New Holland or MF?

From a dealers stand point that has had manufacturers switch brands the only one with control is Kubota. All others buy from other companies which mean five ten years down the road you could have difficulties.

In all fairness, art, I think Kioti has the closest set up to Kubota. I think Kioti makes all of their own stuff.

Getting parts down the road is a definite consideration. There are so many out there though I can't imagine getting parts would be impossible. There is no doubt in my mind that Kubota is a great tractor. My worry is that orange gets so much hipe that what am I really paying for? A name? The Mahindra (or whatever it is) is heavier and has a more practical transmission for crawling and hauling. What is the deal with the draft control?

It really comes down to personal preference.

I knew my 4110 wasn't actually built by Mahindra, but it does have their name on it, and with that, their reputation. I really don't see Mahindra putting their name on some random POS. They have been building tractors/cars since the 60's so this not something new to them. Sorry, I'm really not trying to step on any toes just letting you know my thoughts. My first actual post but I've been lurking in the background for some time now.:D

Anyway, I too debated between the 4110 and 4400 and decided to go with the 4110. While I liked the 4400 and have no doubt it is a fine tractor, I just like the layout and feel of the 4110 better. My only complaint about the 4110 is the location of the fuel tank. Its nice that its out of the way behind the seat but it makes it hard to see up close to the tractor when you hook anything to the drawbar or three-point arms. Other than that I love it and have had zero problems (about 300+ hours so far).

I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Later,
Matt

Thanks Matt,

How stable and powerful is your 4110? Have you run it on steep grades? I will be going uphill light but coming down heavy. This is another reason I like the extra weight of the 4110 but does this make it bog down when climbing hills. The 4400 is lighter and has more ponies so I would imagine it holds the power curve a little longer...but this is not a compromise for a wider heavier tractor that a load of logs is less likely to push the tractor. :D
