I have not had the chance to test drive either one of these machines. I hope that changes this weekend. I was quoted around $23,000 this weekend at a Mahindra dealer for the 4035 HST model with FEL. However, he didn't have one on the lot for me to try out. I have not gotten a quote for the Kubota L3940 HST, but I suspect it will be much more.
Looking at just the numbers for weight, FEL and 3 point lift capacity, etc. it seems like the Mahindra is ahead of the Kubota. However, I'm new to the tractor game. I didn't even realize Mahindra was as big a player as they are.
My question is what am I missing out on by sticking with the Mahindra instead of the Kubota and vice versa? Has anyone driven both? What did you like/dislike?

I looked at Deere and New Holland before I purchased my Kubota L3940. Looking back, I made the right decision for my needs. The L3940 has been a solid tractor with no issues performing every task I need well. You will have to compare the Mahindra youself, as I have little experience with them. How close is each dealer to you? How long has each dealer been in business? Do you see each dealer being there in the future when you need them? Does dealer stock parts or can get them quickly? Does dealer have a good service department? Good luck with your decision, whichever you get, I am sure you will be happy. Philip.

Here is a post I wrote earlier this year, hope it helps. Also, compare how easy it is to remove FEL's from Kubota and Mahindra. I can remove or install the FEL on my L3940 in under 5 minutes.

I got some money from a land sale and wanted to retire my 1950 Ford 8N. I did not care which color, just wanted best value from reptuable brand.

Conditions: 40-ish horsepower, HST trans, R3 tires, front snow blade.

1st looked at New Holland 3040. Pros: Buddy has one that I have used a little and liked. Great reputaion. Has connection back to Ford. Cons: Dealer 20 miles away. $26230.

2nd looked at JD 3720. Pros: Have two JD lawn mowers and like. Great reputation. Great parts availability. Dealer 15 miles away (but only 2 miles from work). Cons: Everyone and thier brother has one (I like to be different). 3 cylinder turbo (I did not want 3 cylinder or turbo). Smaller frame. $24700.

3rd looked at Kubota L3940. Pros: Great reputation. HST+ features. Dealer 3 miles away. Cons: There aren't any! $23080 (connectionos with dealer may have led to better price)

Briefly looked at MF but did not seriously consider.

IMO, Kubota was best value for money within the brands I thought as most reptuable and dependable, and closest dealer. Enough cannot be said for a close dealer, no matter what manufacturer you choose.

I have had my L3940 for a year and a half now. Drove buddy's NH a few months back, still a nice tractor, but not as nice as my L3940 with HST+. Went to State Fair last fall and sat on JD3720 to make sure I made right decision. I did make the right decision, JD3720 felt small, has small tires, and stickers on dash were pealing off. Mechanically, I am sure the JD3720 is a good tractor, just was not right for my application (plus everyone and their brother has a green tractor, I like to be different).

Philip

PS, Still have the 8N. NOT FOR SALE!

I am only familiar with Kubotas which have served me well.

Mahindra may very well make good tractors, but their dealership network in my area has been a here today, gone tomorrow, so I have not seriously considered one. If it is different where you are then, I would certainly give one serious consideration. Worldwide Mahindra makes and sells a lot of tractors.

Go test each one out. Don't worry too much about numbers just yet. Once you have tried the Kubota out you'll have questions about the HST+. The dealer may be able to answer them but it's hard to gather in all the information while also trying out the tractor.

I don't know much about the Mahindras but now that I have gotten use to the HST+ on the Kubota I wouldn't go without it. The H-DS lever is something I use all the time. It allows you to downshift without even slowing down or taking your foot of the pedal. For example when digging into a pile of dirt, just as the bucket hits the dirt you would shift down while pushing into the pile and when you get to the point where your lifting the bucket up full of dirt you shift back to high.

Also the 3940 comes with two different loaders. Make sure you get the price with the 724 loader, not the weaker 514. Also you can always get a price from Brady at Barlow's Equipment. Lots of us have bought from him and I have yet to read anything bad.

Kubota, dealers world wide and what 2200 in this country to support you IF you need it!

Many times when I'm comparing tractors I look at many things, like castings, are they crude or look more refined? The general fit of the panels and chassis, are things going around sharp corners? Are the holes for loader mounts nice tight fits or are they elongated to fit more make tractors so they will loosen up. Are the front steering drag links below the front axle, watch out while in ruts!!! Chances are you will bend it! There are many things to me that make a tractor better designed and to me the two you have choosen don't really compete! Look at the Kubota transmission, tht alone sets them light years apart.

You should be looking at a Kubota L-3800 or something along that lines to be more equal on fetures.

If you don't a little razzle dazzle(and maybe a bit of ribbing from the neighbor), I would buy this tractor:

2009 NEW HOLLAND BOOMER 8N 40 HP to 99 HP For Sale At TractorHouse.com

If I didn't have a tractor I like already, this would be sold by now. It is the size you are looking for.

Chris

I looked at one of these while over in MS this weekend. The dealer wanted $36,000. It is one nice tractor, but I'm not paying $36,000 for it. Now if the tractor above that you mentioned were able to be financed at 0% I'd take it. BTW the one I looked at in MS had a black ROPS instead of chrome.

So Art, what if the guy had wanted a manual trans. What make has the better trans? Is the 12x8 GST of the Kubota, light years ahead of the 12x12 power shuttle of the Mahindra? Have you even looked closely at a 35 series Mahindra? I don't think that some of your comparisons even pertain to the 2 models that this guy is looking at. Just quickly looking weight and hydraulic GPM is on Mahindra's advantage. Draft control is std on the 4035 where as it is an option on the L3940. HST goes to Kubota, manual gear shift goes to Mahindra. The list goes on and on, but one tractor is in no way light years ahead of the other.

I think that a lot of times you get carried away with your one sided comparisons.

Just my opinion. ;)

DeltaBowHunter,

That is a dealer selling the tractor. They may have good financing.

Have fun buying.
