Hey everyone,

I've been scouring the web and visiting dealers learning about tractors, and I have a really good Mahindra dealership nearby, and I personally know the guy that works there, so I'm almost definitely going to buy one of these two tractors. That being said... I'm considering a "new" 3616 vs a brand new 1538. I'm new to tractors, and this would be for light usage at my small horse farm.

I'm trying to confirm my last minute decision. They seem pretty close in terms of capabilities, especially for my usage, and the big thing in my mind is whether I want the mechanical style of the 3616 or the new tier 4 computerized updates of the 1538. I'm leaning toward the 3616 because I just feel it'll be cheaper to repair in the long run. Anyone have any preference or knowledge they can share on the benefits of the 1538 that may sway my opinion?

Given two tractors of pretty much equal weight, power, dependability and capability, I would ALWAYS opt for the one without the Tier 4 emissions nonsense. The Tier 3 and Tier 4 Interim systems are simpler and there are fewer things to go wrong.

So, to answer your question, if the 3616 is a Tier 3 or Tier 4 Interim, I'd buy that one instead of the 1538.

Yep. Perfect, thank you. That's my thinking as well. Since I don't know too much about 'em, I am just really unclear if the Tier 4s or the 1538 really provides any benefit over the Tier 3 3616.

Look at the tractors closely, just my opinion and this has nothing to do with the tire 4 stuff, I much prefer the 3616 tractor. It's just a little bit smaller and lighter, look at the joystick controls, back around the hitch area is finished a bit nicer over all I think.

Nothing wrong with either one, I just prefer the 3616 is all. ;)

I've heard that the Tier 4 gives a little better fuel economy, but these compact tractors don't use much fuel anyway. To me, the negatives of Tier 4 outweigh any positives.

It may turn out that all our fears about the complexity of these Tier 4 motors and their various incarnations of the regeneration systems are completely unfounded. But we won't know that for several more years. Until then, I'd rather not be a beta tester or a crash test dummy for them.
