Mahindra 2638
Hello All,

We are in the process of buying a new tractor.

This will be my 1st compact, we currently use a 1938 ford 9N that has been passed down a few generations. It is currently having the motor rebuilt, and I dont think I want to make it "work hard" again, I would rather restore it and have it for generations to come.

What I think I want, is a Mahindra 2638. I am aware it is quite a step up from the ole 9N. We will be using this for plowing out 1/2 mile private road, driveway, and small lot (in the winter). In the Summer we will use it for a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and even a little bit more of that. Meaning, grading the road and drive way, plowing, discing, dragging, rototilling a large garden, general landscaping, brush hogging, and some light forklift applications as well.

From what i have found, the 2638 is the best bang for the buck given: horsepower, weight of the tractor (for lifting capacities), ergonomics, and as a bonus-no DPF.

My main concern is the name on the tractor, I do not know anybody who has a mahindra tractor. So I cannot get real life, personal thoughts on them.

I have 2 dealers both within an hour of my house, and the closer of the 2 has been selling mahindra products for (only?) four-ish years. They seem to have the best warranty, providing you can get the tractor to the dealer so you do not have to pay a service call (this may be the same on all brands-not sure).

I would really appreciate some input on this tractor as well as the brand.

Thanks in advance!

The dealer and how they will support you if you have an issue is the most important factor no matter what brand you pick whether it's Mahindra, Deere, Kubota, or any other. If the dealer is bad then your experience will be bad.

As far as the name, the Mahindra brand is the #3 seller of compacts under 80 HP in the US. As far as the 2500 and 2500 series as well as some others, those are built by TYM for Mahindra. TYM is a Korean company who builds tractors under the TYM brand and also for several other brands including Rural King. They also own the Branson brand. TYM is the second largest manufacturer of tractors under 60hp sold in the US because they sell under multiple brands.

The 2538 and newer model 2638 are very popular machines.

With no past experience with either of the dealers, how might I go about "checking them out?"

The salesman was very informative, friendly, and honest (even talked about the green tractors they do not sell). But I am aware sales and service are two totally different departments!

I owned a 2538 for a year and ran 200 tough hours on it. I put in gravel driveways for a living and used this tractor pretty hard. Not one issue. None. I traded in for a 2655 and no issues with that. The 2538 is a work horse for the size.

Salesmen are....salesmen. Ask to see the service department and they should be willing to walk you through it. Do they have their own trucks for hauling your tractor if it needs service? Do they have a service truck that can come to you? Remember, you'll have to pay to get the tractor to and from the dealer even if it needs a warranty repair....that's how every brand works, transportation isn't included. I've also run across places that sell snowmobiles and four wheelers that are selling tractors. I'd be skeptical about them with regard to servicing a tractor.

I have a 2555 i purchased in spring of 2017, 140 hours, no issues. hogging, post holes, grappling, loader work, plowing snow, backhoeing. i visited 4 mahindra delaerships and chose the one farthest from me because good attitude, walked thru the workshop, verified explanations they gave me were correct to my questions. i went back many times to that dealership to try out the machine, digging, driving, trying all the buttons and switches, tried it in cold weather, etc. then after all that i bought from them.

I have worked a Mahindra 3616 HST pretty hard for several years, bought new and now just over 400 hours. Other than a battery last year and issues with the 3 point side limiters breaking due to the design in my opinion, it has done everything I expected without any major problems. I would buy another Mahindra tractor based on my experience with their tractors.

280 hours on 2538 I bought 11/16, start engine switch broke, dealer sent me a new one, 3rd function had oil leak, removed broken o-ring, applied tape, no more leak. This machine does everything I want with ease. Would definitely buy again. Seat is a killer, will replace soon.

I have 121 hours on my 2540, I use it to mow, haul wood and remove trees. A great machine very tough I would not think twice about getting a second one.
