I have an older M655..great machine and a true commercial mower compared to what Deere sells at the big box stores. Unlike new Deere zTracs that have an oil filter in each drive motor this early machine has one screw on filter-actually same part no. as the oil filter.

When I last used machine and parked it, it ran perfectly. I then decided I should change hydro oil-20-50- and the filter as I could not recall when I last did that- Well I go to back it out of barn and its "growling"- a noise that it never made before - and I pull it back in and both"sticks" are dead. like no resistance in system. Owners manual only says to lube filter gasket-nothing about filling filter too. Could system have air in it?

2000 hrs on it. Appreciate any opinions.

Yes, you should have filled the filter. Maybe give it a crack and if no oil wants to drip, pull it and fill it. Then get the drive wheels off the ground and move your drive levers initially with it in tow mode and back into drive move until it smooths.

And use the JD oil recommended in the manual. Might call for low-vis, maybe not.
