What are the differences? Why is one better than the other? There is a used M for sale close by and I am deciding whether or not I want to take a look.

Everything is different.

The L6060 is a HST "deluxe" compact. The M6060 is a larger frame size gear driven machine.

I have an M. All I read on forums from L owners are issues with the different transmissions such as the Glide Shift.

I view the M series as being more basic less frills power train wise which translates into fewer problems long term.

"Why is one better than the other?" Neither is "better", it just depends on your needs, we have an M8540HDC and L5740HSTC. For us the M8540 is a necessity while the L5740HSTC is in ways a luxury.

The M6040 is an overall bigger, heavier duty machine than my old L4630 yet it is more maneuverable and weight capable.

My Kubota M6040 with Land Pride grapple - Rimgard in the rear tires - Rhino 950 on the 3-point - weighs 10,100 pounds. Yet it's nimble as a pixie. Ha, ha, ha - and my nimble pixie will tear the crap out of my lawn if I start "pixieing" around.

With power steering and directional/independent rear braking - how much more maneuverable do you need.

I've "bulked up" my M6040 to be able to handle Class 2 implements.

More maneuverable???

What the???

Well, it sounds odd, but he ought to know if he had both tractors. It might be the turning radius or the front end construction. We've got an M59 - a whole different type of tractor, I know - but the point is that tractor is noticibly more maneuverable than any other tractor clost to its size that I've driven. It's as nimble as tractors half its size. The difference seems to be in the front axle, short wheelbase, and how far the front wheels will turn without binding or sliding a tire. Maybe that is what he found too.

I think my M7060 is pretty nimble, however, I’ve never owned anything smaller... but I do think it is rather..nimble.. ;).

With the box blade on the back, it’s fine. But with the rear blade on the back, now I’m constantly rubbernecking to make sure I don’t destroy anything in my path. LOL.

Nimble/maneuverable may relate to the operating environment also. Here in the Scabrock it's just stands of ancient Ponderosa pine and bunch grass. I have no problems pulling my ten ton farm wagon anywhere on the property.

If my 80 acres was like is shown in many TBNers photos - completely different story.
