I have just purchased a m6040 w/fel 1153, fluid in my tires, 300 lbs of weight on each rear tire, and 72" box scraper with scarifiers. It will be delivered today. I was wondering what size disc would be just right for this size of tractor. I have 20 acres of mostly sandy loam. Also should I look for a pull behind or a 3-point type? Which will be better?

I have a 5040 w/loader so we are pretty comparable. Personally I prefer a pull type disc because it typically penetrates the soil better but if you are using it in tight working areas then you will probably be better off with a 3pt hitch because it is much more manueverable. 3pt hitch discs typically don't weight as much so they generally don't dig as deep but a couple of extra passes usually makes it comparable to the pull type(at least on the soil that I am in). As far as size I am using both 8' discs(pull and 3pt) and my tractor handles it fairly easily. I would definitely get something a little wider than your tractor that way you can go along the edge of a treeline and not have to put the operator so much into the trees/brush of the field edge. At least that is my thoughts.
