Hello,

I have a new-to-me M4700 with 900 hours. I frequently get a grinding noise when I go to start it, as if the starter has not fully disengaged. Of course, I always turn the key off immediately and on the next try, it generally starts as normal.

Does this sound like a starter issue, or solenoid, or??

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I haven't ever had that on my tractor, but have on cars. The bendix is weak. It needs to snap the gear over faster. Could be gummed up or just worn out. The result is what you have. It will wear the starter gear down and cause it to grind even more next time. You might be able to lube it to help out but you may want to just replace it. Don't know if you could just buy parts or need to replace the whole starter. But you need to do something soon before the wear starts to get the ring gear or you'll really be spending money to tear things apart.
