LX277 Fuel

My LX277 stopped running like it was out of fuel. I replaced all fuel lines, fuel filter and fuel pump. Still would not run. Check fuel solenoid. I could hear it retract, but cut the pin anyway. It now starts and runs, but the 1/8" fuel line on top of carb dumps lots of fuel, enough that I was very worried about a fire. I rerouted the line to feed back into the carb, but now runs VERY rich (black smoke).
Anyone have an idea what is causing this and a remedy?

No idea what you are doing. But be careful.
This "but cut the pin anyway" threw me off.

As long as you know what you are doing, okay. But sounds a tad bit like you don't, so hopefully help will show up soon.

The pin I cut is the plunger inside the solenoid. Its purpose is to open the valve to the carburetor when the ignition is turned on (vice versa, shut it when the ignition is off).

Turns out the float in the carb was stuck. It now runs ok. Learned a lot about the tractor!

Jim - The purpose of this fuel solenoid is to prevent "backfiring". I've often wondered how serious a problem this would be if I lopped off the pin on my LX277's fuel solenoid. I replaced this part once and hope not to repeat that process ... given the fact this little part costs more than $100 a pop. Ridiculous.

How does your LX277 run without that plunger? Any serious backfiring? Any damage to the neighborhood? Any hearing loss?
