Mahindra 3016
Hi everyone! This is my first post on the site although I've been reading and listening for a while now.

I just bought a new Mahindra 3016 today. Can't pick it up till tomorrow though dang it. the insights and info each of you has posted was my primary reason for choosing it. THANKS

I'll probably be asking a lot of questions as I have never owned a tractor before. I have used one a couple times, but never my own.

I got a 60 inch tiller, a 60 inch bush hog and a finish mower with it. All LandsPride. Next will be a trailer to haul it around but that can wait.

I have a little over 25 acres to learn and play in. Mostly woods that are pretty open with old logging roads running through. About a mile of road total and I would like to clear them back out. I do a lot of gardening now that I am retired and have a few elderly neighbors that will appreciate the tiller each spring.

Sorry to ramble, but I get excited in my old age.

Welcome and congratulations on the new tractor. Since you said you have been lurking perhaps you already have checked out the safety section; if not, good information about tractor safety. I learned a lot anyway.

Well, it seems that I still have the touch

I have less than 10 hours on the tractor and I broke it.

I was dragging some brush to a burn pile and I heard a loud crack under my feet. Suddenly the tractor would not move. I tried everything but no go. I tried FWD, TWD, reverse, nothing. I finally got it to move, but very jumpy.

When I got it to the garage, I climbed under it and I can turn the drive shaft by hand and the spline on the rear turns but the shaft going into the punkin doesn't. I think I stripped out the splines. I have not even come close to overworking the unit at this point because I am still learning how to use it.

The dealer said it will be at least tuesday before he can pick it up.

I was really surprised at how small the driveshaft is. I would have expected something a little beefier.

My son will tell you that I am the only person he ever heard of who has actually broken an anvil. Of course, I say it was defective in the first place.

Pa Pa Jack, please be more specific about how this happened. Just how were you dragging brush to a burn pile? We need a few clues, as other 3016 owners will want to be on the look out for a future problem.

I had a large pile of shrubs I had cut down. Enough that it would normally fill my 4x8 yard trailer. I wrapped with a length of chain and hooked that to the FEL bucket.

I backed about 80 yards to my burn area and disconnected. When I went to swing around to push the pile up better, there was a rather loud "clunk" right under my feet and the tractor would not move. After trying everything I could think of, it finally moved but I am pretty sure only the front wheels were driving.

When I got back to the garage area, I slid under the tractor and grabbed the drive shaft. I could turn it easily, but the U-joint did not turn. The splines in the rear U-joint seem to be stripped out.

I spent some time checking out the tractor and think I have determined what broke.
It seems that the drive shaft that connects to the front differential has stripped out the splines at the universal joint. Why it stripped is anyones guess. I have not done anything that should have put that kind of strain on the part. Could it have been a defective part? Possibly.

I can get the unit to travel, but the spline definately makes some strange noises like the splines are trying to catch. I will not be driving it until the dealer can come pick it up. No sense taking a chance of making things worse. It looks like it is the female splines that tore out. I sure hope they are designed to take more stress that I have put on them. Otherwise I'm going to be very disappointed in this tractor.
