I am at work now so I don't have access to my mower. I was hoping to swing by Home Depot on the way home and pick up an oil filter. Is there a specific part number that I should look for (it's 1 year old)? I'm hoping that HD even carries them....

I was at Home Depot, they only carried the 12-050-01 which they sold for $11.50.

My local Cub Dealer has them for $7.50.

I picked up a Toro-branded p/n 12-050-01 at Home Depot. But today I noticed that the Kohler-brand filter is p/n KH2505025. Are they "interchangeable"? Will the p/n 12-050-01 work just fine? Am I being paranoid? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Also, what do you think of Kohler-brand oils (thread)?

I just looked at the Wix filter site and both those filters cross to the same Wix part number. I imagine they are the same filter from Kohler with different packaging.

The specs on those filters from Kohler aren't that great IMO. I think you could spend a little more $ for a Wix or possibly another brand and get a better filter.

OK, I'll bite. Why should I spend a little more for a Wix 51056 oil filter? Not trying to start an argument but this is the first that I have heard of Wix. Also, where are you seeing the specs on Kohler filters? Is there a comparison or review site? Is this from your personal experience? I am not disputing your knowledge and I thank you for the info.

If you go to the Kohler site and download their engine accessories catalog pdf they give the micron ratings of their filters.

Kohler 12 050 01-S = 32 microns from their catalog

Wix 51056 = 19 microns from http://www.wixfilters.com

This is provided they're using the same testing procedure for both. No way to know for sure about that. The Kohler filters appear to be made by Champion Labs. They make a lot of filters, from the low end Super Tech at Walmart to the high end Mobil 1 and K & N.

There is a lot of information on the web about oil and filters, who makes what, how well it works, etc. One place in particular where there is a very active forum about such things is here http://www.bobistheoilguy.com.

Seriously, just trying to help...

First things first: JSharp, you have been a big help and I appreciate your time. I just had not heard of WIX before. After I checked out their "WIX Traps More Dirt" Demo Page I was convinced. Apparently, WIX also makes NAPA Gold filters.

It looks like FleetFilter.com has the best price for my needs at $5.19 each (UPS Ground S&H is about $10). I'll probably get a few as the shipping was the same for either 2 or 3.

Thanks again for the advice! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wix does make the NAPA Gold filters too. I've used a lot of WIX filters and always been happy with them. It helps that my son works in a parts store that sells them /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif but Fleet Filter is just as low cost as what I've been paying.

Glad I could help.
