LT1024 Cubdet

I have a friend that has a LT1024 with 197 hours on it. He is asking $1200.00 It seems to be in good condition... I have not found the 1024 many places to comapre it... Is this a good deal? Please advise...

Randy, all I can say (from my experience anyway) is RUN as fast as you can from that deal. I have a LT1050 with 26HP Kohler and 50" cut and only 30 hours. Buying was a major mistake. It cuts well and deck washer works OK but perfroms horribly in thick grass or the slightest of incline. I would say that something in the 2000 series or better that is heavier and shaft driven might be fine. My yard is level with the exception of a moderate slope on the side yard and the front drainage ditch. The Cub struggles mightily in these areas and sometimes comes to a standstill. Also do not even think about pulling an aerator - stopped mine dead with the tranny belt whirring and making noise. This event happened today after the warranty service dealer returned it yesterday and said there were no issues with the lack of power or hydrostatic tranny. I am stuck with a $2,000 CC that is under 12 months old and power is worse than my former $500 12.5 HP Murray from Wally World. Go shaft driven or go another brand.

I do not experience any issues climbing hills or in thick grass, however my LT1050 coasts or runs away going down moderate slopes. The tranny doesn't re-engage until I am at a near stop. I have only had mine for three weeks and am considering returning. On day one I pulled a roller (36") and it stopped dead in its tracks after 1/2 hour. After doing some reading, I think it may have overheated. After letting it sit (while I was on the phone with the big box I purchased it from) for 20 minutes, it operated like nothing happened.

I would look for something else Randy, those belt drive jobs with the sealed hydros are IMHO little more than throwaways with some not even being able to get out of their own way just doing simple mowing. For the same price you can easily buy a good used older shaft driven Cub Cadet or JD actual garden tractor that will have a lifespan many decades beyond those cheap LT's, and will perform like a mule with any job you throw at it. Or better yet save or spring for a new CC 2542 GT. The old saying you get what you pay for TOTALLY applies to lawn and garden equipment. When it comes to the entry level lawn tractors, just because it has the Cub Cadet or John Deere name on it does not mean it's a great piece of equipment- it is what it is, a cheap entry level machine regardless of the name. Don't get me wrong, CC and JD have made cheap LT's since the late 1970's- you don't see many for sale, as most all hit the scrapyard after 10 years or so of use- its all they can take. Even a real old CC job like this will easily beat the snot out of the new CC 1000's and 1500's in the box stores:

I was just curious Fordlords if you have any actual experience with a 1000 series tractor. I too would love to buy a 2000 series tractor but the cost is prohibitive for my actual needs, so I purchased a CC LT 1046. Granted, I just purchased the tractor, but so far I'm more than happy with it. What bothers me most is your continuous bashing of the 1000 series. So much in fact, that I almost regret the purchase based solely on your posts. I find most of your posts to be informative, but lately, I find them disheartening and less than proud to say I'm a new Cub Cadet owner. Just my opinion. Thanks.

I can see where Fordlords is coming from about the 682, but I don't see any need to knock the 1000 series.
I own a 1046 and my dad owns a 682. I have spent a lot of seat time in the past 26 years on that 682. It's an awesome machine, they definitely don't build them like that anymore. But my 1046 is no slouch either! Would I put the 1046 through any of the gardening ground engaging tasks that my dad has put that 682 through? No. Shaft drive has it's place and so does belt drive. The main thing to keep in mind is to use the machine as it was designed to be used. If you abuse the equipment it will not last as long. If you take care of your equipment/tools, they will take care of you.
