I recently bought a 4140h. When I got it home it had 5 hours on the clock. At 25 hours it went into regen which was disappointing but I figured it made sense because on the lot it was started twice a day to move it in and out of the warehouse. It sat on the lot for a couple months so I decided I would just see if it was longer until the next regen.

I start it and warm it for about 5 minutes at 1500 rpm. I operate it in the 2k to 2,400 rpm range. I cool it down in the 1200 rpm range for a few minutes as I put it away. I have been working it hard for several hours at a time. 18 hours later at 43.5 hours it went into it's second regen. For a machine that is estimated and reported here to go about 50 hours between regen cycles this seems off, especially considering how I am using it.

Does anybody have any ideas why this may be occurring or similar experiences? Should I bring this to the dealer's attention? They may say it's not hours that causes it but 70 percent on the canister, which is true buuuuuut, why am I not getting close to the estimate? Is this an indication of something that shouldn't be ignored?

My XR3135 is acting identically. I just haven't had time to work it any yet this year. I am nearing the 50 hour mark and have had 2 Regens. All my hours have been in Fall and Winter. I also hope the Regen interval increases.

I just received my XU6168 yesterday and when the dealer was going over the tractor with me, he said it may regen 2-3 times before the 50hr serv. His explanation was that its better for the tractor to regen 2-3 times in a 50hr period because there's less soot to burn off between regens. A single regen every 50hrs the regen has more soot to burn off and may not get it all thus still continuing to build up over time causing problems for your tractor down the road.

Interesting spin. I guess they are finding a way to explain why it isn't matching the marketing materials. I did the 50 hour service this morning at 45 hours. Exhaust manifold bolts weren't checked yet because I haven't figured out how to do it without removing the turbocharger. I also still need to check the frame mount bolts for proper torque. So far everything I have checked has been way too tight. The oil drain plugs were probably at 100 ftlbs or more. The filters were way too tight. The wheel bolts were far tighter than spec but I haven't loosened them to spec yet. I will before too long. Some of the zerks on the backhoe were unusable at the angle they were tightened to. I loosened them, added grease and retightened but they need to be replaced with something that can stay in place while being greased. Some of the zerks took lots of grease the first time when I got the machine. Beware of greasing the main axle bearings. I blew out a bit of one of the orings. I'm mostly good to go for another 250 hours now except for the perpetual grease game. So far so good. The hydro filters had a good bit of particulate in the fluid that drained out of them. I'm glad I changed them just to ensure the max flow through them. The engine oil was not troubling visually. I won't bother with an analysis.

You might ask your dealer to reflash the ecm to the most current software.
I’ve got a 68hp engine, but it always regenerates at 50 hours, plus or minus one hour.
I wonder if your engine isn’t broken in yet and it’s burning oil and making soot. Has the oil level changed at all? Does it have a diesel fuel smell to it when you smell the dipstick?
On older diesels, the exhaust can you a lot about what is going on with the engine. These new DPFs catch all of that, so you don’t know if it is running rich caused by a leaking injector, or burning oil from a bad valve seal or worn rings, or maybe has a bad head gasket allowing water into the cylinder. We are stuck relying on the computer to tell us when something is wrong.
I suggest using Rotella T-6 at your 50 hour service and see if that helps at all.

I used Rotella T-6 this morning. I did my 50 hour service at 45 hours because it was a cloudy morning and in Texas in July you take those when you can get them. Oil was clean with no off smell. If it isn't broken in now, it isn't going to break in fast with the synthetic oil. That stuff is the bees knees.

I just had my second reign on my XR4140 cab tractor right at 89 hours.

My XR4155HC did it’s first regen at exactly 50.0 hours. Haven’t had second one yet, I’m just passing 58 hours.
